In September, the Massachusetts State Appeals Court justice ordered the National Board of Medical Examiners to give Harvard medical student and lactating mother Sophie C. Currier, 33, of Brookline, Massachusetts, the extra 60 minutes of break time she'd requested so she could pump breast milk during her two-day, nine-hour doctor's licensing exam. Currier had sued the board after being denied the special time-out (the standard breaks total 45 minutes), claiming she'd face medical complications if she couldn't take a pause with her breast pump -- or step away to nurse her now 11-month-old daughter, Lea -- every two to three hours during the test, which she needed to pass in order to begin her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Judge Katzmann overturned a previous court's ruling against Currier, saying that the time was necessary to put the multitasking mom on "equal footing" with men and nonlactating women sitting for the exam. Currier called the decision a victory "for nursing mothers who are trying to juggle family obligations and further their careers."
