How to Make a Cow Bento Lunch Box

  • Anna Yamamoto

These cuddly cows are made of rice balls. To make, form freshly-cooked Japanese rice into balls (wet your hands with water to prevent sticking)—make a dent in the middle and fill with anything your kids likes, like mashed black beans. Wrap the rice over the filling to completely cover.

Antichoking warning: Remember to remove toothpicks and cut up blueberries, grapes, carrots and other food for children under 4. See our Antichoking guide for more information.

Serve the cow bento with mixed berries, or any of your kid's favorite fruits, for a healthy dessert.

For the cow decorations, you can use seaweed for spots and the face and cheese and ham for the head.

For sides, tuck in asparagus wrapped with bacon (or ham or cheese) and tomato halves sandwiched with cheese. Dot with carrot flowers for an extra pretty finish (see our step-by-step photo guide on how to make them).

At the top is an egg flower; here's how to make a ham flower (the technique is the same, using a flat egg omelet).
