The Lion King is not really an original story. It's practically a remake of an old Japanese TV series called Kimba the White Lion. And while the folks who made it deny that connection, they don't deny that they were heavily influenced by Hamlet.

I'm extremely disappointed to read that many of your "best of" animated films are in fact highly inappropriate for school age children.

I realize researching material before you expose your children to videos, books, movies, etc. may not be common place for many families (we use a site from Focus on the Family) but it is a stop gap tool in our home.  Spiritual content aside, many of these films contain inappropriate content (violence, drugs/alcohol, sexual, crude/profane language).  4 films on your short list aren't even close to being appropriate.  I'd love to know what you based your criteria upon (was it solely reader response)?  An "easy" movie that the entire family can watch, shouldn't replace parenting.  Parents need to stop concerning ourselves with what others think, do our own research and then decide with an educated approach.  Do you honestly believe exposing your children to violence, sex, drugs, or profanity is appropriate for a 4, 7, 10 year old?  Shame on you for trying to influence family choices without your magazine doing your background work either Parenting magazine.

I don't know what you are talking about jointops 1. Other than Shrek, I would definitely show these movies to my children. I was raised on most these movies myself and have such fond memories of them. I love most Disney movies. Even though I saw Scar push his brother off a cliff and cried like a baby, I watched it over and over again. I, also, never had the urge to push my own brother off a cliff because of it. If you teach your children right from wrong and lead by example they will not stray from it just because of a movie.

I mentioned 4 movies. Lion King isn't one I'm concerned about. Have you seen the others or done some internet research as to whether each of these are appropriate for school aged children? I have. 4 definitely aren't because of the content.

I've seen all of them except the 3 newer ones (Brave, Up and Wreck-It Ralph). So, maybe those are the ones you are talking about. Still, in my opinion, we can't shelter our children too much or they won't be able to face the world. I'm not saying deliberately show them violence, sex and drugs. However, if a children's movie you are watching has content in it you don't agree with, you could discuss it with your kids after the movie has ended. It can be a way to hear what they think on certain subjects and give you an opportunity to teach them about it. Again, this is just my opinion, obviously only the parent can decide what they think is right for their children and what works for their family.
