How to Make a Cow Bento Lunch Box

  • These cuddly cows are made of rice balls. To make, form freshly-cooked Japanese rice into balls (wet your hands with water to prevent sticking) -- make a dent in the middle and fill with anything your kids likes, like mashed black beans. Wrap the rice over the filling to completely cover.

Antichoking warning: Remember to remove toothpicks and cut up blueberries, grapes, carrots and other food for children under 4. See our Antichoking guide for more information.

  • Serve the cow bento with mixed berries, or any of your kid's favorite fruits, for a healthy dessert.

  • For the cow decorations, you can use seaweed for spots and the face and cheese and ham for the head.
  • For sides, tuck in asparagus wrapped with bacon (or ham or cheese) and tomato halves sandwiched with cheese. Dot with carrot flowers for an extra pretty finish (see our step-by-step photo guide on how to make them).
  • At the top is an egg flower; here's how to make a ham flower (the technique is the same, using a flat egg omelet).
