20+ Easy Homemade Halloween Costumes for Babies

  • Mailman

    What you need:
Blue pants, button-down shirt, and cap
    Safety pins
    Three small stuffed dogs
Small messenger bag stuffed with a few pieces of old mail
Red, blue, yellow, and white craft foam
    Hot-glue gun

    1. From the inside of the pants, pin two stuffed dogs by their mouths to ankles. Attach a dog to the mailbag as well.

    2. Using craft foam, create a U.S. Mail badge, and pin (or glue) to shirt pocket. Cut out letters from craft foam and glue "U.S. Mail" to cap. (Our model wore his backward!)

  • Cotton Candy

    What you need:
    12 yards of pink tulle
    Pale-pink or white leotard
    Hot-glue gun
16 by 20-inch white oak tag or a craft-foam sheet
Elastic measured to fit under chin

    1. To attach tulle to the leotard: Make a loop in the tulle every foot or so, twist the loop, and then glue to the leotard at the twist. Don't worry about perfection: Loose, lumpy, and bumpy is what cotton candy looks like!

    2. For the hat, roll a paper cone out of white oak tag or a craft-foam sheet; glue; punch holes in the sides and thread elastic through, knotting the ends, to make the chin strap.

  • Smarty-Pants

    1. With a hot-glue gun, glue 30 to 35 rolls of Smarties candies to the front of a pair of solid-color dark pants. You can place them in rows or randomly. (If you decide to glue the candy rolls in the back of the pants as well, avoid the top section so that your child can sit down comfortably.)

    2. Glue individual Smarties candies to an inexpensive headband or cap.

    3. Wear with a bright top and bright shoes.

    Princess Leia

    What you need:
Enough 2-inch-wide white ribbon to tie around waist
    Silver duct tape
Two 8 by 11-inch sheets brown craft felt
    Hot-glue gun
    Inexpensive brown headband
    Oversize white T-shirt
    White tights or leggings

    1. Decorate the ribbon belt with the duct tape to look like it has a buckle (or buckles).

    2. To create hair buns: Roll, then coil, each sheet of felt and glue one to each side of the headband.

    Road

    What you need:
    Roll of yellow duct tape
    Black pants and top
    Hot-glue gun
    8 small toy cars
6 by 8-inch sheets yellow and green glitter craft foam
    1 pack stick-on letters
    Elastic headband

    1. Use tape to make line on top. Glue cars on clothes.

    2. From yellow foam, make merge sign. Glue to pants.

    3. Cut a street-sign shape out of green foam and, with letters, spell your street. Staple sign to elastic headband.

    Gumball Machine

    1. Paint a plastic soda cap with silver paint. With a hot-glue gun, glue to red hat.

    2. Cut ¿5¿" out of black craft foam and glue to pants leg.

    3. Cut hood and sleeves off a clear raincoat; put on backward (snaps in back). Use a 30-inch piece of elastic as a belt; blouse coat over it. (You can also use a clear bag.)

    4. Blow up 20 multicolored balloons halfway. Put in through back of coat. Snap up coat; cut off excess, if any.

  • Old Candy Land game

    What you need:
Piece of cardboard slightly smaller than game board
3 to 4 feet of wide ribbon
    Hot-glue gun
    Candy hearts
    Craft-foam crown
    Large lollipop as prop

    1. Glue game board to cardboard, leaving a 1-inch flap. Punch holes in the flap and thread ribbon through. Tie behind neck.

    2. Glue game pieces to board.

    3. Glue cards from the game and candy hearts onto crown.

    Frenchman

    What you need:
    Striped shirt
    Dark pants
    Red bandana
    Dark beret
    Black eyeliner
    Small French baguette

    1. Dress child in the striped shirt and dark pants. Tie on bandana, loosely, and move knot slightly off center. Top off with dark beret.

    2. Draw on a curly mustache with eyeliner. Liquid will go on easier and darker, but you can use pencil, too.

    3. Use baguette as a prop.

    Lobster

    What you need:
    Red hoodie and pants
    Black pipe cleaner
    Hot-glue gun
    Two 1-inch black pom-poms
3 pairs red rubberized gloves (or a fan of red paper)
2 red oven mitts, as claws

    1. From inside the hood's top, push both ends of pipe cleaner through a few inches apart. Glue a pom-pom to each end.

    2. For tail (not shown): Glue gloves together in a fan shape. Pin to the waistband of the shirt (or glue on a paper fan.)

    3. Wear oven mitts as claws.

    Bee

    What you need:
Black pipe cleaner, cut in half
    Black headband
    Hot-glue gun
    Two 2 1/2-inch black pom-poms
    Roll of yellow duct tape
    Black long-sleeved bodysuit
    Black tights

    1. Wrap half of pipe cleaner around headband, with end standing up as an antenna; glue one pom-pom to end. Repeat for second antenna.

    2. Stick duct-tape stripes to front of bodysuit. Don't wrap all the way around or body-suit will be hard to get on.
