6 Terms You Need to Know

CCD (Charge-Coupled Device)
The light-sensitive technology that makes the difference between an analog camcorder and a digital one. Look for more CCDs, as well as larger (measured in inches), higher-resolution (measured in pixels) CCDs for better image quality and detail.

Image stabilization (a.k.a. DIS, EIS, OIS)
Technology that compensates for shakiness when you're shooting. Most consumer camcorders use digital (DIS) or electronic image stabilization (EIS), but some higher-end models use optical image stabilization (OIS), which yields better picture quality.

Infrared capability (a.k.a. NightShot, NightAlive, Night Recording)
A feature that uses infrared light to illuminate a dark scene, letting you record in low light or even complete darkness.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
A two- to four-inch color screen included in most camcorders for viewing while you record or during playback. Larger screens are better but use more battery life and add to overall price.

Video format
Camcorders save video in a variety of formats. Digital formats include Digital8, MiniDV, MicroDV (in size order from largest tapes to smallest), as well as recordable DVDs. MiniDV is currently the most popular format.

Zoom
The greater the optical zoom (10x, 20x, etc.) the more shooting flexibility you'll have. You'll want to pay more attention to optical rather than digital zoom. Digital zoom uses software "interpolation" (not the lens) to magnify your image, so quality is degraded as magnification goes higher. Look for a camcorder with at least 10x optical zoom.
