According to AAA, more than 43 million Americans—including a ton of family travelers—will spend Thanksgiving at someone else's dinner table this year. The most hard-core of this bunch will celebrate on their own. In a foreign place.

Tomorrow is the day for family, friends, good food and to think about all the many things we are grateful for. Kids may simply equate Thanksgiving with getting a few days off from school, eating a lot and playing with cousins, but there are a few websites that will add some education and fun to this festive day.

Tomorrow morning, long before the sun comes up, we are embarking on a (possibly) ill-conceived Thanksgiving roadtrip to Ohio. My husband is off picking up the rental car now. When he gets home, we’ll pack and load it and then, with any luck, all of us will retire early. Our alarms will go off at a ripe ol’ 3 a.m. and we’ll stumble downstairs, into the car, and onto the highway.

I’m trying my hardest not to be all Bah Humbug about this grand adventure, but it’s hard. Ten hours in the car isn’t my idea of fun under any circumstances, but then you add in a toddler and a baby in utero who likes to play bongos on my bladder and I can’t help but wonder whether we’ve made the right decision.

This will be the first year in ages that we’ve embarked on any major Thanksgiving travel. In recent years past, we’d gone to Boston to see friends but that’s just a few hours away, practically a local trip. This is much bigger than that.

Lately I’ve been feeling really grateful. Everywhere I turn, there’s something to make me realize how lucky I am to be a mom, to be a wife and to live in a beautiful little town in a gorgeous free country. I’m blessed. Here are a few things I’m thankful for this year.

17w5d – The big a-ha! over this Thanksgiving week is one I am—surprise, surprise—significantly grateful for. The Mister and I had the distinct pleasure of hosting my entire immediate kin and much of his, 14 in all. Half stayed with us for the week, which meant I got to get intimately reacquainted with the delicious patterns of being both the kid sister and the big sister, the first daughter, the middle child, the daughter-in-law, the sister-in-law, the hostess and, now, the bearer of the first grandbaby on my side. (I can be a little smug over that last one, right?)

Despite my best efforts to eat everything in sight, my family still has enough Thanksgiving leftovers to feed a small village—a small village of people with very large appetites.

But really, who wants 3 days worth of blah turkey sandwiches? We don’t, which is why we’ve rounded up some creative, delicious and easy recipe ideas to make the most of your Thanksgiving leftovers. (My vote is for turkey parmesan and cranberry-sauce pancakes. Yum!)

Thanksgiving is two days away. Let me first say that this is probably my favorite holiday—it’s all about eating and hanging with family and eating some more and there are no presents to stress or go broke over. Ideal! Let me also say that I am thankful for a lot this year. I have two healthy, happy children, a husband I adore, good friends and family around, my cancer is still in remission, etc., etc., etc. I could go on about the more obvious ways in which I’m grateful, but I’d rather talk about the stuff that wouldn’t make the annual “what are you thankful for?” dinner table discussion. The things that make my life as a parent better/easier/more enjoyable/less stressful and genuinely more fun. In no particular order, here they are:

With Thanksgiving on the horizon (gulp!) and Christmas hot on its heels (double gulp!), we’re moving into the season of holiday cheer–and gift-grubbing. Kids are also barraged by ads for toys and computers and video games this time of year, so it’s not uncommon for kids to come down with a case of the “gimme’s” and find themselves with a Christmas list that’s way, way too long.
