My Calves Ate My Ankles and My Belly Button Has Escaped
March 11, 2010
I'm baking a cake right now. It's one of my spontaneous cravings I decided to cave in to.
Actually it wasn't that spontaneous. It's my sister's 13th birthday. But she lives four states away. Just talking to her about her birthday made me want cake. So I bought some cake mix on the way home from work. I need to get my sugar fix out of me though before my gestational diabetes test on Monday!
Cravings are just one of the things I'm trying to get used to. Along with cankles... These aren't pretty. Some people ask what cankles are. If you haven't seen Shallow Hal, it's when your calves eat your ankles. My husband thinks it's gross but I took a picture. I thought it was funny. Here I am with skinny legs and fat cankles.
Any tips on how to get rid of them? A nurse I spoke with said it's normal so long as they go away in the morning which they do. Once I get home at night and put my feet up they go down. But throughout the day at work they get bigger and bigger and start to hurt.
I've heard different ideas: Less salt, more water, protein, feet up... I'm not sure what helps me more but I'm trying to do a little of it all.
I also have a weird thing going on with my belly button. It pops in and out depending on... Well I'm not sure why it does that. It popped out early -- around 15 weeks. But today it looks like it's half way in. Sometimes after I eat it pops all of the way out. Most days you can see it through my shirt and that's a little embarrassing. Go ahead... make your outie jokes!
I don't have any stretch marks on my belly yet... I'm using a few lotions and creams though I'm not sure they'll do anything... I hear they don't really work and if you're going to get them you'll get them. I already have them on many other parts of my body so I assume I'll get them on my tummy too.
I also have that dark line running down my tummy... I can't remember if I read that goes away or not. Lots of changes going on with my body but you know what? It's all worth it!
Just you wait little Spawnie... I'm gonna be showing you these pictures and telling you about all I went through to get you here!

i know how you feel
I had cankles, too, from about 12 weeks onward. They DO eventually go away after baby gets here. Random: you didn't by chance use to work in G-ville, FL, did you? You look really familiar to me! (and your names sounds familiar, too)
Linea Negra
The dark line is the linea negra - it'll go away after the baby comes. I am currently 29 weeks pregnant and my ankles have started to swell this week. The left one is swelling more than the right which is strange... I didn't swell at all with my first daughter. I guess it's true - every pregnancy is different!
Stretch marks and the linea negra
I have stretch marks on my hips from puberty, but I never got them from pregnancy. Neither did my mom. We were both religious cocoa butter users, though, so whether or not it was that or genetics or both, I don't know. But just because you have some elsewhere doesn't mean you'll get them on your belly. Keep creaming in the meantime, though! My linea negra stuck around for a good six months or so. It faded over time but I could definitely still notice it quite a while after birth. P.S. - If the cake thing becomes a frequent craving, you can replace the egg and oil in boxed cake mixes with a can of soda to reduce the amount of fat in the cake. Just mix the cake mix and soda, and you're good to go. It might end up sticking to the pan a bit more than usual, but the consistency is similar and it still tastes great! Can't help with the calories in frosting, though :)
lol at the cankles--aren't
lol at the cankles--aren't they terrible? I was told less salt/more water too...Your body will be going through so many changes--it's crazy!
My BellyButton became an outie during baby-time, but then, after he was out, became an innie again--only it seemed a lot farther in!! No idea what that was about, lol.
Also, let me know if your shoe size changes!
Feel your pain
Jennifer, if it makes you feel better, I just turned the computer with the picture of your cankles toward my husband and said, "Remember when my ankles were like this?" His reply? "Yours were worse than hers!" So that should make you feel a little better. :) Honestly, my ankles became cankles for the last two full months of my pregnancy and no amount of keeping my feet up made them go down. The last three weeks of my pregnancy, they looked so horrible that my boss felt bad and told me to work from home three days a week to keep them up full time. It didn't help that it was August in Texas, so you tend to swell in the heat! I used oils and creams on my belly every day, and I got lucky in one sense...the stretch marks I do have only run about an inch or two long and they are below my belly button, so I can still wear a bikini. What happened is that my baby was turned one way and stetched that skin out down low, then she changed position and for the rest of my pregnancy, it was kind of like I had a wattle of stretched out skin hanging loose below my bump LOL. They are so faint and low that I barely notice them...it bothers me more that the skin there is still loose and my belly button, which was a cute, little innie before, is now a larger, deep, cavelike innie. But I most miss my old breasts. I did not breastfeed, but still had to endure the milk coming in. Before, I had small but extremely perky breasts that stood straight out on my chest. After one week with porn star boobs, the milk went away, and my formerly perky boobs looked like two deflated balloons that now hang about an inch lower and rub against the top of my stomach instead of standing straight out. So sad, but a small price to pay in the end for my angel girl who smothers me in kisses and sings songs to me everyday!
cankles
I had them too while pregnant with my son. I got them about 7 months along and within the first month of having my son they were gone. so dont worry they wont hang around!!!
4 kids one on way
i have 4 kids and im 12 wks preggo no stretchmarks on tummy never had cankles i always used palmers coco butter and it is proven to prevent stretchmarks (the special kind) i have the dark line down my tummy but strange enough i always had it since i was a kid it darkened while im preggo then lightens back up a few months after birth
TED hose
Have you heard of TED hose? They're kind of like thigh high panty hose, except they're tighter. They were actually invented to prevent thrombosis, but they're actually great to also prevent fluid retention and varicose veins. Compression panty hose are similar. They can be especially great if you have a day where you know you'll be up moving all day long (shopping!) and can't put your feet up.
There's also those shoes now that have a rocker effect to them, so that your feet rock back and forth more than they would with regular shoes so theycan actually help to improve circulation and lymphatic drainage.
