The Short of It
British infant photographer (and mom) Victoria Doyle honored the nine babies she lost during pregnancy with a touching image depicting her son holding hands with a shadow child.
It was a long and difficult road to parenthood for Doyle, who experienced nine miscarriages in addition to the three successful pregnancies that led to her two sons, Jenson and Blake, and daughter Darcy.
During a photo shoot of her children last year, she discovered that in one of the images, it appeared that her son was holding hands with someone. That inspired her to create an image with an "apparition" that represented the children she lost along the way. "Every time I look at this image I can't help but get a lump in my throat," she says. "I do truly feel that the little silhouette is an entity in itself, not just representing my own loss but for everybody who has had their hopes and dreams taken away so soon."
Victoria is considering creating a series of images which honor her losses. "I would love to capture my kids in the same way for all seasons. I have an image in my mind of all of my children playing on a beach during the summer holidays—it would look rather fun to have all of my children including the 9 others all playing together."
It's no surprise that an image like this is going viral on a day like today, which is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. This lovely photograph will resonate with anyone who has experienced the loss of a pregnancy or of a newborn.
