The Short of It
Reality star mom Kourtney Kardashian swears that eating her placenta has changed her life after the birth of her third child. So, would you try it?
Kardashian welcomed son, Reign Aston Disick, late last year. While we are yet to see a picture of the newest Kardashian kid, the star shared her postpartum ritual with her fans via Instagram.
"Yummy...PLACENTA pills! No joke...I will be sad when my placenta pills run out. They are life changing! #benefits #lookitup," she posted.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, studies are inconclusive about whether eating one's placenta—in any form—is beneficial. As the site points out, most of what we know about ingesting the placenta is anecdotal.
But eating one's placenta could—key word, could—increase the release of oxytocin and help the uterus shrink back to its normal size (hello pre-pregnancy jeans!). Other possible benefits include stress reduction, a lower likelihood of postpartum depression, more energy and better milk production.
Since none of these benefits are proven, I probably wouldn't try eating my placenta. But hey, I say whatever works for you, great! So if Kourtney Kardashian enjoys ingesting her placenta, more power to her!
