More Than Half of U.S. States Adopting National Education Standards

This morning it was announced that 27 states will move to implement national education standards in their curriculums, with more states expected to approve the standards as well.

The Common Core standards will set benchmarks to determine what students should have mastered each year from kindergarten through high school: for example, by first grade students should be able to "ask and answer questions about key details in a text" in English classes; by grade 8, "explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse" in math classes. The national standards must represent at least 85 percent of the school’s curriculum. An education research group found the standards to be stronger than 37 states' current curriculums in English, and 39 in math.
