JCPenney has recalled about 27, 000 Cooks deep fryers. The deep fryers pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers because they have a faulty heating element which can cause them to overheat. JCPenney is aware of five incidents involving the deep fryers -- one report of a minor burn and three reports of damaged countertops.

The Cooks deep fryer (1/3-gallon capacity) has a brushed stainless steel exterior, a wire mesh basket with a handle, a lid with a window, and black handles. "Cooks" is stamped on the side of the deep fryer; model number 22016 is printed on the bottom. The fryers were sold exclusively at JCPenney's stores nationwide, catalog, and www.jcp.com from August 2007 through January 2008. Each fryer had a retail price of about $50 and was made in China.

Consumers should immediately stop using the deep fryer and return it to their nearest JCPenney store for a full refund. Contact JCPenney toll-free at (888) 333-6063 anytime, or visit www.jcp.com.
