From Cathy Mealy, mom of Liam, 7, and Grace, 5, Lynnfield, MA (Makes 2 dozen)
  • 2 cups butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light- or dark-brown sugar
  • 1⁄4 tsp salt
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1⁄4 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1⁄4 tsp vanilla

    1. Preheat oven to 300°F. Cream butter in a mixer.

    2. Beat in brown sugar gradually. Add salt. Then add flour, 1 cup at a time. Add cardamom and vanilla. Mix well.

    3. Turn dough onto a well-floured board. Pat or roll to 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 inch thick. Cut into desired shape with cookie cutter.

    4. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden.
