Fun ways to enjoy museums with kids
The best museums blow kids’ minds with awesome exhibits and hands-on fun. Since May is National Museum Month, there’s no better time to enjoy everything these amazing institutions have to offer.
Check out a cool kids’ museum near you. Go to Childrensmuseums.org for listings by state.
Toddlers will dig Museum ABC — each letter is matched up with a painting from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Older kids will love From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E.L. Konigsburg, about two kids who hide out in the met.
For a taste of a 19th-century treat, make sour-cream cookies (get the recipe at the Oberlin Heritage Center’s website, Oberlinheritage.org).
Create a mini-museum, with your child as the star artist. Pull his best masterpieces to date and have him make a couple of new ones, using anything from paper and crayons to clay. Then invite a few friends (or proud grandparents) over for the gala opening.
