Chores That Teach

Toddlers are more likely to make a mess than to neaten up. So make cleaning more fun with these mind-boosting tasks:

STACK ‘EM UP Have him organize books and magazines on the coffee table, according to size  — he’ll learn the difference between big and small.

GET IN SHAPE Give him round, rectangular, and square plastic containers to organize; show him how they nest inside each other.

COLOR COORDINATE Teach your child how to pair socks, and to sort and match washcloth and towel sets.

START COUNTING Make a game of tidying up by asking him to count how many toys he can carry to his room at once.

LEND A HAND Let him hold a can so he’s able to water plants  — it will actually strengthen his ability to balance.
