Lo and behold, all the speculations and rumors were right and the iPhone 5 was finally announced to its usual fanfare.
If you follow technology news, you’re well aware that yesterday was the big Apple announcement that people have been anticipating for months. You know, the one about the iPhone 5, or at least that’s what everyone speculated. Lo and behold, all the speculations and rumors were right and the iPhone 5 was finally announced to its usual fanfare.
Is the fanfare deserved? According to what I’ve seen thus far. Yes. The iPhone 5 boasts big improvements from the 4/4S and is essentially a new phone that is faster, thinner and much more powerful. Here are some key new features:
– Size: If you plan on upgrading, you’ll need to throw out those old cases. The iPhone 5 features a new shape that is longer and leaner, and it weighs less too – 18% thinner and 20% lighter, to be exact.
– Screen: The screen is bigger as well and has the same retina display and resolution as the 4S, just with greater color saturation.
– Power: The A5 processor has been upgraded to an A6, which means browsing, scrolling and general phone functions will be much faster.
– Camera: The iPhone 5 features an 8MP camera that works better in lower lighting situations, is faster and features a new panoramic mode.
– Network: Verizon, Sprint and AT&T users in areas with 4G LTE connectivity will be able to take advantage of this ultra-fast network with the iPhone 5.
– Siri: Siri is getting an update too, including the ability to speak your Facebook status updates and have Siri post them automatically. Siri is now available on the new iPod as well.
– Connector: Another accessory to recycle from previous versions. “Lightning,” the new connector for the iPhone 5 has been dramatically changed and is now 80% smaller.
These new features are enough for me to want to upgrade from my iPhone 4. That along with the new operating system to iOS 6 – a complete overhaul from iOS 5 – will make the iPhone experience feel brand new. As for pricing, the iPhone 5 will be $199 for 16GB; $299 for 32GB; and $399 for 64GB with a two-year contract. If you are an older model iPhone user and aren’t impressed enough with version 5 to upgrade all the way, you can get the 4S 16GB for $99. Pre-orders for the 5 will start this Friday and then they will start shipping out on September 21st.
