Before You De-Friend on Facebook, Consider Making Them “Acquaintances”

Is there someone in your Facebook world who you once talked to eight years ago at a party, but somehow manages to pop up in your feeds multiple times a day with updates on what book she’s reading, what her kid did in the basement or what happened when she went to the doctor’s office? There may be a big handful of people who you kinda know, or maybe not know at all, but continue to get reminders of who they are on your Facebook feed – whether you like it or not.

Well, if you’re in the “or not” category and would like to clean house a little bit, Facebook’s “Acquaintance” feature is just the thing for you. You can easily (and inconspicuously) add anyone to your Acquaintance list, still keeping them as a friend, but making their updates less visible in your feed. Facebook says that only major updates will pop up, like relationship changes, new locations, etc.

Also, the change is not noticeable to whoever you have downgraded, er, moved to the Acquaintance category, and your feed will be more open for receiving news and updates from those you feel closer to.

The process for moving people is simple. You can either go to your Friends page and manually type in names to add or see who Facebook suggests. Similarly, you can go directly to Facebook’s suggestion page and add people from there. Clicking on the latter link took me to a list of 33 people in my area who I don’t Facebook with very much. Once Facebook goes through your geographic location, they also cull more Acquaintance-worthy people from your college, high school and career connections.

On the flip side, if there are people who you correspond with a lot on Facebook or whose status updates you want to make sure you see all the time, add them to your Close Friends list.

With a little friend management, your Facebook feed can be all about the status updates you really truly care about.
