I use the "clean up after yourself as you go along with your day" technique. It is exactly what is sounds like. Make your bed as soon as you get out of it. Clean your dish(es) after you finish dinner (instead of waiting for the sink to fill up). Throw out the trash when its full (not just on trash day). Put your laundry away as soon as it is fold instead of letting it sit in the hamper for a week.It honestly makes this so much easier for myself and my husband when we clean up after ourselves throughout the week. That way, on the weekend when we really clean (i.e. vacuum, dust, scrub toilets, etc.) it feels like a lot less work. It is a lot less work at the end of the day. At the end of the day the dishes are cleaned and put away instead of still soaking until tomorrow, the beds have already been made so the rooms look a lot neater and cleaner, and the laundry was put away during a commercial break - race to get it put away while your show is on commercial break!
