Of All the Things He is, “Autistic” is Just One

Courtesy of Julianna Strano

In my house, autism resembles a little boy who is:

• an inquisitive, picky-eater

• a train lover

• a thumb-sucker

• a blankie holder

• scared to death of fireworks

• a lover of Christmas

• singing

• strong willed

• snuggling

• a sprinkler frolicker

• a cousin of 10

• a big brother of a baby sister

• asking if he can watch his programs now

• routine follower

• challenging

• puzzle doing

• DVD-watching

• anxious

• loving

• a parade watcher

• museum going

• pool jumping

• a daredevil

• hyperactive

• wanting a back scratch

• a kitty lover

• a bath taker

• a toothbrush rejecter

• a vitamin denier

• a candy lover

• a mother's helper

• a stuffed animal collector

• a cowboy boot connoisseur

• a fan of elf costumes

• dressed up

• defiant

• a hand-holder

• a kisser

• a best friend

• a declarer of "I love you more"

• my whole world wrapped up in a four-year-old.
