* For a small area (back of neck, say, or tops of feet), relieve the pain with an ice pack, your baby's cold teething ring, or a tea bag soaked in chilly water.
* For a larger burn, sit in a cool tub with an oatmeal bath (like Aveeno). Or wrap up in a towel soaked in a solution of cold water and baking soda.
* Apply a fragrance-free lotion or one with aloe to still-damp skin. This'll keep it from getting dry and itchy, and as the lotion evaporates, you'll feel a cooling sensation, says Susan Goodlerner, M.D., a dermatologist at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
