What to do when unconditional love takes a bit longer
You’ve bought the baby gear and labored over the nursery. And now, here you are with a squealing, splotchy little person. For some, falling in love comes naturally. But for other moms, instant passion is the stuff of movies, not real life.
It’s okay to feel terrified and empty in the beginning: Ties that take a few weeks to a few months to build can be as strong as those that happen immediately. Still, if your feelings of disconnect don’t improve after several weeks, consult your practitioner. Developing a relationship with your baby is a process, and you should feel more and more bonded over time.
