The Derecho Family

Nathaniel (Nathan) and Nicholas (Nico), 13 months, Glendale, CA
“Only God knew what was good for me and what was best for my twin boys, and so it was time to meet them on July 31, 2005. I don’t remember feeling nervous about giving birth prematurely because I knew that they would be okay. But I had no idea what my twin boys would have to go through to survive until I actually saw them.

I gave birth at 28 weeks and 6 days. Nathan weighed 2 pounds, 7 ounces, and Nico weighed 2 pounds, 11 ounces. They went through a variety of health issues such as jaundice, blood transfusions, and feeding and respiratory problems. We were so delighted to see our babies graduate from the incubator to an open crib, from preemie pacifiers to regular pacifiers, and from gavage (tube) feedings to bottle feedings. There were little setbacks, but we tried not to let them pull us down.

Nathan stayed in the NICU for exactly 2 months, while Nico stayed a week longer. Both babies went home with inguinal hernia and umbilical hernia, which are already resolved. Nico went home with an apnea monitor for 2 months because his heartbeat would slow down during feedings. We’re blessed that their complications were those that can be resolved, and with God’s continued blessing and grace, they are doing well!”
