Ordinary hotel rooms can be so…boring. Especially when we’re traveling with little ones, we want fun, whimsical and out-of-this-world. With that in mind, I’ve researched a handful of kid-themed accommodations to consider for your next family vacation. Here are three of my faves.
The Great Indoors
The new-ish Base Camp Hotel in South Lake Tahoe, California, is all about exploring and adventure. Fitting then, that this particular room brings the experience of backcountry camping inside. A canvas tent covers a king-sized bed to create the feeling of sleeping under the stars (the best part: no bugs!). One of the walls you can see from inside the tent has been painted with a forest mural to create the sensation of being in the woods. There’s even a decorative fireplace designed to look like a campfire. As if these touches aren’t enough, the hotel also boasts a fire pit just off the lobby, where guests can congregate and roast s’mores daily until 2 a.m.
The Barbie Room
Just about everything’s pink in the new Barbie Room, a special kid-only accommodation at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cariari in San Jose, Costa Rica. The room, which debuted this summer, has two twin beds, and is chock-full of Barbie-themed stuff, including linens, clothes, costumes, games and more. (Of course it boasts are a bunch of Barbie dolls, too.) The Barbie Room is attached to a connecting room for Mom and Dad; to stay, you’ve got to book both rooms for a minimum of two nights. Through Nov. 11, 2012, rates start at $248 per night (for both rooms). The rate includes access to all hotel amenities, including the outdoor pool.
The Eloise Suite
Any kid—or parent, for that matter—who is familiar with the Eloise books likely knows The Plaza Hotel in New York City. Earlier this year, the hotel unveiled a special Eloise Suite, designed by fashion designer Betsey Johnson. Some of the touches: Zebra-striped carpet, a sparkly padded pink headboard, and original Hilary Knight prints (she is the illustrator for the books). It also comes with a series of Eloise books and DVDs, as well as Eloise and Weenie dolls. The rate for all of this: $995 per night, which includes a $100 gift certificate to the Eloise shop downstairs, and a monogrammed Eloise bathrobe that guests get to take home.
