15-Year-Old With Terminal Cancer Creates Bucket List That Goes Viral

Alice Pyne

There are a lot of things on the Internet that get passed around or go “viral,” like a video clip of a cat dancing or a unique marriage proposal, but when Alice Pyne created her bucket list, she never in her wildest dreams imagined it would fall into this category. What makes the story so heartbreaking is that Alice has terminal cancer. And she’s 15.

I found out about Alice from a recent MSNBC story on the rise of her blog and all the incredible support she is getting from all over the Internet, including a tweet from Katy Perry, which has undoubtedly helped #alicebucketlist become a Twitter trending topic. Alice’s blog header is simple, but powerful:

I'm 15 and I have terminal cancer. I've created a bucket list because there are so many things I still want to do in my life ... some are possible, some will remain a dream. My blog is to document this precious time with my family and friends, doing the things I want to do. You only have one life ... live it!

Her bucket list includes the following:

  • To make everyone sign up to be a bone marrow donor
  • To swim with sharks
  • To go to Kenya (I can't travel there now but I wanted to))
  • To enter Mabel in a regional Labrador show
  • To have a photoshoot with Milly, Clarissa, Sammie and Megs
  • To have a private cinema party for me and my BFFs
  • To design an Emma Bridgewater Mug to sell for charity
  • To stay in a caravan
  • To have a purple Apple ipad but I'm not really allowed to put that on here and mum is trying to borrow one
  • To be a dolphin trainer (I can't do this one either now)
  • To meet Take That
  • To go to Cadbury World and eat loads of chocolate
  • To have a nice picture taken with Mabel
  • To stay in the chocolate room at Alton Towers
  • To have my hair done if they can do anything with it
  • To have a back massage
  • To go whale watching

Alice has been overwhelmed (and incredibly surprised) by the support she’s getting and the level of visibility her blog is receiving. An excerpt from her latest post is:

OH WOW OH WOW OH WOW it's the middle of the night and we just hit £10,000 for CANCER RESEARCH by you sponsoring my little sister for her run this weekend. We can't go to bed because we're hooked on reading all the messages. I feel so good that with your help we are getting more people on the bone marrow donor list AND now we're putting money into supporting cancer research. Happy happy happy :)

This post alone has already garnered 1100 comments and counting.

Alice started her blog a mere four days ago and is already taking the Internet by storm. What’s more amazing is her courage and the positive attitude she is spreading about the value of life and living it to its fullest. Here’s what she said in her first blog post:

Most of you know that my scan at Alder Hey wasn't very good and that the cancer is now spreading through my body. It's a pain because there's so much stuff that I still want to do. I guess that my particular cancer is made of strong stuff (which is hard because I know I gave it my all and I'm strong and determined too). Anyway, mum always tells me that life is what we make of it and so I'm going to make the best of what I have and because there were so many things I still wanted to do, mum suggested that I turn my ideas into a bucket list.

We could all learn something from this very brave girl.
