Amazon Adds More Children’s Programming to Prime Instant Video Line-Up

Amazon Studios

With the rise of gadget use in the home, there are so many ways that kids can get their fill of quality children’s programming. Of course, through the tried and true TV, but now also through parents’ iPhones, iPads, Droids, Kindles and other mobile devices.

And now, one of the biggest suppliers of programming for PBS is joining Amazon to produce original children’s content through its original movie and series production company, Amazon Studios.

Amazon's production arm has already developed original programming pilots for preschool-age kids that can be downloaded, like Brian & 1234 Bots, Adventure Land and others. Amazon Studios announced yesterday that it will team with WGBH, Boston's influential public television station, to begin production on another kids’ series called Sara Solves It.

Co-developed by creative minds responsible for Curious George, Arthur, Blue’s Clues and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Sara Solves It will focus on the adventures of Sara and Sam, a brother-and-sister duo who solve mysteries and answer questions using math puzzles. Angela Santomero, one of the show’s creators described the math-focused show as one that will “challenge and entertain kids while helping to build their enthusiasm for a subject that's critical to their success in school.”

Plus: Amazon to Launch Kindle Service for Kids

The show is in the initial stages of development and along with the other kids’ shows available, will be posted on Prime Instant Video for customers to watch for free.

The Amazon announcement accelerates the company's arms race with Netflix, which recently announced its own first step into original children’s programming in cooperation with DreamWorks Animation. DreamWorks is making a cartoon series called “Turbo: F.A.S.T.” for the video rental and streaming service, based on its forthcoming film “Turbo.”
