To All the Teachers

Welcome back to school!  I hope you’re as excited to be starting this year’s journey with us as we are.  We’ve given you our hopes, our dreams and our kids for nine months, and your shoulders are heaped with great expectations.  We look to you as partners to guide our children as they learn, grow, and become the best they can be.  Thank you for all you will do to support our families’ goals this year!

I recently came across a book called Teaching Is… by retired teacher Marjan Glavac.  It draws on his years of experience to portray the magic, joy, and struggles of being a teacher. It’s filled with pictures and short parables from his own experience.

For example:

Teaching Is… Getting a hug from the toughest student in your class on the last day of school…when no one else is looking.

Teaching Is… Asking your principal to listen to a child assessed 3 years below grade level read to him in his office and showing him the text the student will be reading…and then naming the student and seeing the look of amazement on your principal’s face.

It’s a simple book, a small amount of text on each page but it ranges from poignant to funny and had me laughing and tearing up as I remembered my own teachers and as I thought of my own, often thankless, role as a teacher to my children.  True teachers are a lot like mothers, caring, nurturing, and growing children.  You’re dream builders and I identify with that.

Thinking about teachers this week, I remembered this parent/teacher conference video I saw on YouTube last year and thought I’d share it.  Even though I’m not a school teacher, it rang true to me.  Enjoy.
