Western Wake iMoms delivered more than 1200 books to the Methodist Home for Children on Monday, Dec. 13. The book were collected over the last month and were a part of Parenting Magazine’s “Read.Connect.Grow!” early literacy campaign that encouraged Mom Congress delegates to take action in their communities to boost literacy among at-risk children.
As the NC Mom Congress delegate and a foster mom, I worked with our Western Wake iMoms to help foster children receive books for the holiday season. I thought Methodist Home for Children had about 30 foster children in their program and our initiative would be fairly easy to manage.
After the program launched on Nov. 5, we discovered that we were collecting for 300 children. Our community responded in an amazing way with enough books for each child to receive not just one or two books, but a set to own and cherish.
The books were collected in bins located at two Cary (NC) locations: Great Harvest Bread Company on Maynard Road and Huntington Learning Center on Kildaire Farm Road. Stacey Kannenberg, WI Mom Congress delegate, donated more than $300 worth of her books including ones in Spanish. Love the power of Mom Congress!
