Today marks the first of 40 days of Lent. Those who observe are in the process of figuring out what exactly they will part with during this time of moderation and penitence. Although I don’t personally observe the holiday, I have friends who in the past have sworn off chocolate, being judgmental, yelling at their kids, oh, and reality TV. Regardless of what you choose to give up, in true tech fashion, there are apps that can help you get through these 40 days of sacrifice.
Each day starts with an inspirational picture and quote to keep you motivated during the 40 days. In addition, this app lets you track and monitor your progress throughout Lent, and even tally atonements amounts that you think match your sacrifice. If you give in to your caffeine craving and end up having several Starbucks Mochaccino Lattes, you can donate the money you accrued and donate it to charity when Lent ends.
This is a no frills app that offers information tips and historical information about Lent-related themes like fasting, prayers, abstinence, worship and almsgiving. You can randomize the facts or simply advance through each one manually or with a shake of your phone. You can also share these facts on Facebook with fellow family and friends who are observing Lent as well.
Days Without, $1.99
If you aren’t religious but still want to test your willpower and give something up, Days Without is a good app choice. It’s a simple app that lets you monitor what you want to part with (caffeine, alcohol, swearing, etc.) and tracks your progress with each day that passes.
These apps can be helpful in motivating you to get through the next 40 days (or more). That is, unless you are giving up technology.
