If your kids are just starting to learn about computers and the Internet, it is important to put online safety rules into place from the get go. As a parent, it can be hard to find the balance between making them aware of what Internet usage means and not scaring the dickens out of them.
Common Sense Media, a nonprofit dedicated to helping families thrive in a world of media and technology, may be able to help you. The organization created a video aimed at kids in grades K-3 to teach them about what it means to be on the Internet or as they call it, an “Online Neighborhood.” This is a great introduction on Internet usage and uses language that is understandable to kids.
Jeremiah, the young star of the video, teaches kids about what an Online Neighborhood is and offers three rules to remember:
1) Ask your parents first
2) Only talk to people you know
3) Stick to places that are just right for you
