Being pregnant, especially for the first time, is usually a period wrought with questions, questions and more questions. You can load up on knowledge from books and the Internet, but sometimes it’s nice to get little quick tips and reminders here and there as you progress through those long nine months. Anyone who is pregnant, wants helpful pieces of advice along the way and has a cell phone should check out a program called text4baby.
text4baby is a simple but valuable service by the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) that sends text messages on a variety of topics critical to your health and the health of the baby including immunization, nutrition, prenatal care, emotional well being, drugs and alcohol, labor and delivery, exercise and fitness and more.
Anyone can register on the site or text BABY to 511411 (or BEBE for Spanish) and customize messages based on due date and how far along the pregnancy you are. The program also extends beyond the birth of the child until its first birthday and sends messages on car seat safety, newborn tips, safe sleep and developmental milestones. After registering, you will receive one message every day for six days with general information, then three messages a week throughout your pregnancy and baby’s first year.
As you get more comfortable with the pregnancy and/or newborn phase and don’t need the messages anymore, you can stop at any time. But when it comes to the well-being of you and your child, knowledge is power and text4baby is definitely worth trying out.
Even if you don’t have a text messaging plan, you can still participate in this program and receive free texts.
