Using Technology to Provide Aid to Japan

Stock Xchng

As more information and photographs about the disaster in Japan are revealed, we are all horrified and saddened by the devastating loss the people there are experiencing. Even though we are on the other side of the world, we can take part in the global aid initiative that has been mobilized to help a country that will be recovering for years to come.

Here are simple ways you can use technology to help:

Text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross for Japan Earthquake Relief fund. Any additional questions about the text-to-donate program can be found here

To donate to Save the Children, text JAPAN to 20222 and $10 will be automatically added to you monthly wireless phone bill. More information can be found here

Text JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 to make a $10 donation to The Salvation Army. More information can be found here

Each text made will result in a $10 donation to the organization of your choice. The charge will be automatically added to your monthly wireless bill.

Donate money via the Red Cross fan page

Dog Bless You, a non-profit organization sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation, has set up a Facebook page and is donating $1 each time a new member “Likes” its fan page.

Donate $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 or $200 via this iTunes link. The donation will be automatically deducted from the credit card associated with your iTunes account.

Microsoft has offered to donate $1 to Japan relief efforts every time the following tweet is retweeted:

How you can #SupportJapan - For every retweet, @bing will give $1 to Japan quake victims, up to $100K.

(Although there has been backlash against the overly promotional nature of Bing’s tweet, Microsoft has apologized and committed to donating the money.)

There are many other ways to donate to relief efforts. If there is a particular organization or non-profit you are attached to, please visit its website to see if any donation programs are already in place.

Every little bit helps.
