Willow Smith, 9-year-old daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett, released her very first music video for her debut single “Whip My Hair.” Just like the song, which quickly became a viral hit on YouTube, the video is fun, fierce, and seriously catchy. (I.can’t.stop.hitting.replay.) Check it out here:
It should come as no surprise that Willow is chock-full of talent and charisma - it’s in the Smith family’s DNA. (Like mom and pop, Willow’s big brother Jaden made some movie magic of his own in the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid.) Yet naysayers were quick to pick the budding pop star apart -- Willow’s too young, her hair is too funky, her style is too wild. Sure, her fashion sense is bolder than your average pre-tween. So? “Whip My Hair” is not just a dance-worthy track, it has a message for kids: don’t let negativity get you down -- just keeping being you.
“And this is what we all aspire to, isn’t it? To raise happy, creative, aggressive, unafraid, bold, smart, interesting children who see what they want and just, like, go for it?,” My Brown Baby’s Denene Millner recently blogged. “While everyone else shakes their heads and demands that child sit down, I’ll be over here, cheering on Willow being -- and her parents for letting their daughter be -- exactly who she is.”
Me too. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be whipping my hair back and forth for the next 10 minutes.
What do you think of Willow’s music video?
