Microsoft might have a hit with Lips for Xbox 360, but a new product from their research division takes the home karaoke idea one step too far. Songsmith, unveiled yesterday at CES2009, the yearly geek-fest maximus, is a sort of virtual easy jazz band. Sing, hum, or snort into your computer's mic, and an AI algorithm comes up with a music track to match your tune and tempo. Anyone can compose songs "without having an understanding of chord structure or music theory," the press release promises. This is not a good thing.
Sure, kids ought to love science class so much that they want to sing about it. I just hope they don't premiere this at the next school talent show.
