Liza Long first sparked a national conversation about mental illness in the wake of the Newtown shootings with a candid essay titled “I am Adam Lanza’s mother.”
The essay went hugely viral, and now this single mom has been tapped by Hudson Street Press to write a book.
Long will write “I am Michael’s Mother,” a book chronicling her experience raising a gifted child with a mental illness and her challenges with the nation’s current mental health-care system. There is no release date at this time.
Just days after Adam Lanza killed 20 children, 6 adults, and his own mother in a devastating mass shooting, Long published a heartfelt essay on her personal blog. In the essay Long opened up about her fears for her 13-year-old son and her hopes for starting a dialogue about mental health.
“It’s time for a meaningful, nation-wide conversation about mental health,” wrote Long in her essay. “That’s the only way our nation can ever truly heal.”
