Fun with Mental Illness? New Psychiatric Toys

Life can't be all fun and games, right? Paraplush, a German toy company, seem to want to remind us this with their new line of stuffed animals with mental illnesses. "There's Dub the turtle with severe depression, Sly the snake who suffers from terrifying hallucinations, Dolly the sheep with a multiple personality disorder, and a crocodile with an irrational fear of water," reports Orange UK.

To max out the fun, Paraplush includes a pamphlet with the animal's complete medical history, a referral letter, and a treatment plan. How precious! But really, what was this toymaker thinking? "Children and grown-ups like their vulnerability and find something in them that gives them a great sense of comfort in helping to heal them," toymaker Martin Kittsteiner says.

Ummm... okay. Even if we love our vulnerabilities, it doesn't mean we want to play with them. And how do you represent depression and schizophrenia with a stuffed animal, anyway? So maybe we won't be rushing to stores to buy these for our kids. (Sorry, Dub.) Maybe some things, like children's play things, should stay light and fun.

But what do you think? Are these toys ridiculous or genius?
