Vegan Nursing Mom's Baby Dies From Malnutrition

Shinichi Maruyama

We know that breast milk is the ideal food for babies, but for 11-month-old Louise in northern France, it wasn’t quite enough. The little girl is dead and now her vegan parents have been charged with "neglect or food deprivation followed by death" for only feeding her breast milk. Sergine and Joel Le Moaligou called emergency services when they became worried about Louise's listlessness and by the time the ambulance arrived, she was already dead. If convicted, the couple could face up to 30 years in prison.

Vegans refrain from eating any animal products, including eggs and dairy. The autopsy showed that baby Louise was suffering from a vitamin A and B12 deficiency, which can increase a child's sensitivity to infection. She weighed 12.5 pounds (the average 11-month-old should weigh around 17 pounds). Most babies start solids around 6 months, although many choose to start later.
