There’s a rousing discussion going on in our boards about male daycare providers. The original poster admits to being weirded out by a young male teacher who will be working in her daughter’s class next year and assisting with potty training. Some readers who responded say we shouldn’t assume the worst or discriminate (especially since background checks are done) whereas others admit they’d feel uncomfortable with the situation. As one mom put it: “When it comes to my daughter’s safety, I don’t feel the need to be politically correct.”
At my daughter’s preschool, there’s a young guy in his 20s who regularly substitutes. I like him very much, and think it’s cool that the kids are learning men can be caring, nurturing teachers too. But I do confess to being curious about why he’s chosen this profession in a way that I am not with the young female teachers.
What’s your take? Would you pull your kid from daycare that had a male teacher?
