As parents, it’s hard not to get caught up in the Christmas spirit (and we’re thankful for that!). So, ‘round these parts, we’re baking Christmas cookies with the kids, watching our fave holiday movies, and -- oh, yeah -- shopping for presents to put under the tree. But one of the greatest gifts to ourselves during the holiday season is not overdoing it on the buying front, helping us stay out of debt just in time for a new year -- which is why we were thrilled to learn that thredUP, the online clothing swap service we told you about earlier this year, just launched an online holiday toy swap.
The toy swap works just like thredUP’s clothes swapping service (which is also great for finding kids’ winter and holiday party clothes!). If you need toys, you can browse user-posted boxes of toys by age and gender (although the site doesn’t host photos of the contents, users often post pics on thredUP’s Facebook page). Choose the one you want and pay just $5 plus shipping ($10.70 for a medium flat-rate box).
If you have gently used toys that your kids are no longer into, it’s easy to list boxes of them on thredUP. When another family picks your box, you can send it for free. (The company will mail you empty boxes, schedule a pick-up, and generate the shipping label).
Only have clothes to list but want toys, or vice versa? No problem -- users can mix and match the contents of the boxes they send and receive. And, although it should go without saying, the company’s “Golden Thred” rule is that you should only send what you’d be willing to receive.
The company aims to save parents $500,000 in holiday shopping costs this season. Parents, would you join the toy swap to save some money this holiday season?
