President Obama recently told Essence Magazine that his daughters, Sasha and Malia, are not allowed to watch TV during the week -- at all. Instead, they focus on homework, a family dinner, and reading until it’s lights out.
My parents had the same rule in our house growing up. I remember my friends all thinking I had very strict parents, but I don’t remember it actually being that bad. And TV became an event –- not just something I did when I couldn't think of anything else to do. Friday nights were pizza and TV night, and boy, were they the highlight of my week.
However, seeing as I currently need the electronic babysitter for an hour or so each day, I’m not sure I could institute the no-TV-on-school-nights rule myself. Could you?
