One of the great joys of having a big kid is aging out the sugary-sweet world of preschool children’s media. We’re not totally off the NickJr just yet, but I am finding more and more that we can watch movies/TV and listen to music together that don’t make me want to poke my eyes out. No more wondering if Blue will ever get a clue; these days we’re watching the Life series on Discovery and having Lady Gaga dance parties.
Over Thanksgiving, we watched Ramona and Beezus together. I think I loved it as much as she did. Because her bedtime is 8pm—prime-time on the East Coast—we haven’t watched too much network TV together. But occasionally, when she can’t sleep, I’ll let her watch one of my beloved dancing shows with me (So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With the Stars, of course). There’s not much else that seems quite right for her age, but I am excited that we are starting to be able to share pop culture (and that she likes the same cheesy production values I do).
What shows and movies do you watch with your kids? At what age did you starting letting them see TV beyond cartoons?
