Rex Roland, a teacher in Buncombe County, North Carolina, is under fire for writing “minus 20% for being a loser” on a 6th grader’s assignment. The “loser” notes started in the fall, then fell off once he was warned, but recently resurfaced. A mom of one of the students complained and had her daughter removed from Roland’s class.
To put this in context, Roland apparently uses this term in a joking, talking-to-the-kids-in-their-own-language way, and is considered to be a “cool” teacher.
Still, I detest the word “loser,” even said in jest. And I hate the idea of a malleable adolescent, already riddled with insecurity and hormones, hearing it from someone who should be an authority figure.
What do you think – should this teacher be fired?
