If you’ve gone outside in the last few years, you’ve likely seen a kid or two whiz by you on a scooter. For lots of kids, scooters are their number one mode of transport and they can be a great way for kids to get some much-needed outdoor time and physical exercise. But because there are so many scooters on the market, it can be a bit confusing for parents to figure out which one to buy for their child. Of course, it has to be safe and durable, but it should be intuitive and easy to figure out how to ride. Younger kids are best suited for 3-wheel scooters which stand on their own, while older kids may prefer a 2-wheel or trick scooter. But what about that electric scooter that your son wants for his birthday? Let’s break down the different types of scooters that are currently on the market.

Types of Kids Scooters

  • 3-Wheel Scooters: With a single wheel in the back and two wheels in the front, this scooter is the most stable and offers the most in the way of balance help. They don’t go as fast as other scooter types, but because they are meant for toddlers and younger kids, that is quite alright.
  • 2-Wheel Scooters: With one wheel in the front and one in the back, this scooter is better suited for older kids who have learned to balance on their own. They go faster than 3-wheel scooters, but not all suitable for tricks.
  • Electric Scooter: These scooters are powered by a rechargeable battery or small motor. They are a bit on the heavier side. While they are fun and your kids will be begging for them, they usually go quite fast, some up to 10mph.
  • Pro Scooter: These scooters have wider handlebars that are made for gripping while doing tricks or stunts. They are higher-quality scooters because they are meant to take a beating.

Whether you’re looking for a fun way to get your toddler from place to place, encourage your kid to be a bit more active, or if your tween or teen is ready for some half-pipes, a scooter is a great and fun option for kids of all ages. Here are the best scooters out there.

Best Overall

Micro Maxi Kick Scooter with T-bar

Designed for kids ages 5-12, this scooter has tough polyurethane wheels that are great for any kind of pavement. The handlebar safely locks into place in two different modes: The Joystick (for better turning) or a traditional T-Bar (for easier balancing). This scooter will grow with your child, because each part can be replaced individually, which means you will get plenty of years out of it. Plus, it comes in 10 different vibrant colors.

What Reviewers Are Saying:
This is a well-designed, well-manufactured scooter. This is our 5yo daughter's first scooter, so we wanted a three-wheeled scooter for extra stability.

Bought the Aqua Maxi Scooter for my 6 year old daughter and I do NOT regret it at all. It's made of high quality materials and appears to be very durable. It's a ultra quiet smooth ride and turns easily left to right.

Best scooter for 5-9 year old kids. Both my boys have one and use it everyday. Quite resistant to rough boys!

Best 2-Wheel Scooter

Razor A3 Scooter

This classic Razor scooter is great for kids 5 and older and is made from aircraft-grade aluminum. It comes with larger, 125 mm inline-style urethane wheels with springless shock-absorbing system. It has a rear fender brake and a wheelie bar for tricks.

What Reviewers Are Saying:
Definitely go with the ones with the bigger wheels like this one. My 4 year old loves it. Because it has the larger wheels, it can easily go over rough pavement, pebbles on sidewalk and especially the lip of the ramp on a sidewalk (the transition from ramp to street).

I had a hard time choosing a scooter with so many similar models. I am glad we chose this one - it's the perfect size for my average sized 7 year old boy (actually 8 now, but still riding it).

Got this for Christmas for my almost 5 year old. It was easy to set up, almost no assembly required. He's about 32 lbs and 40 ish inches tall. The handle height is adjustable but we've got it on the lowest for now and it's perfect.

Best 3-Wheel Scooter

Micro Mini

This is one of the best scooters for younger kids ages 2-5. The T-bar will grow with your little ones as it adjusts from 17" up to 25". The smooth-gliding wheels and low-to-the-ground deck gives kids a sense of security as they learn to ride. What sets this scooter apart is the lean-to-steer design. Children steer by using their body weight to lean right and left, intuitively learning to lean into a turn, which will help when they learn how to ride a bike later. Riding around on this scooter develops their balance and coordination. It can hold kids up to 75 lbs. and has shock-absorbing wheels.

What Reviewers Are Saying:
We bought this for our 2 year old granddaughter. She absolutely loves it and learned to steer within a couple of days. She's a petite little thing and it's adorable watching her scoot along. It's well made and assembles in seconds.

Our 2 yr old daughter loves this scooter. She rides it around the house on the hardwood floors. Having the 2 wheels in front makes pushing it easier. Also, love the fact that the handlebar doesn't turn, you lean from side to side to make turn the scooter.

We love the Micro Kickboards. This particular one we bought for our 3 year old's birthday. She jumped on this right away and was gone. It's sturdy, well made and easy to use.

Best Toddler Scooter

Micro Mini 3-in-1

This scooter is great for kids as young as age 1 because they can ride on the 3-in-1 before even learning how to pedal and steer. At this very young age, kids can use the ride-on seat that can be adjusted to two seat heights. When they hit age 2, you remove the seat, so your scooter becomes a stand-on scooter with short O-bar. At age 3, you should replace the O-bar with the T-bar to convert to the the regular Micro Mini scooter for toddlers.

What Reviewers Are Saying:
Such a great scooter. We have the standard Micro mini kick for my older son and love it, and this 3 in 1 allows my 1 year old to scoot along with his big brother.

This scooter is the best for little ones. My daughter is 16 months and she's learning how to play with it. It looks like she'll learn fast.

This scooter is fabulous! My 1 1/2 year old son loves it so much. He currently uses it with the seat and O bar and I can’t even believe how fast he can go. He’s just learning how to maneuver it and steer.

Best Big Kid Scooter

Micro Sprite

This chrome scooter is technically made for kids, but really anyone in the family can use it as it can accommodate up to 220lbs. It also has an adjustable handlebar that can be extended to 34” above the base of the scooter or deck for when you want to take your kid’s ride for a spin around the block.

What Reviewers Are Saying:
This micro sprite kick scooter is very well built and engineered to make it convenient. I expect this to last for many years and with the easy adjustable handlebars the scooter will grow with the child.

Bought this for my son, and it’s a home run!!! Biggest problem I have now is getting him off of it because he won’t go anywhere without his new scooter. He really loves it!! As a parent, I’m very impressed with its construction. Seems to be a very durable design. I can expect my son to have years of enjoyment with this scooter.

Excellent scooter- exactly as we expected! My daughter has used Micro scooters since she was 3. She’s 7 now and was so excited to get a Micro 2-wheel scooter. She absolutely loves it. We both also really like the kickstand!

Best Caster Scooter

Razor PowerWing

This unique scooter is great for tricks like sideways drifting and 360 degree spins. The brakes are operated in the front, which takes some getting used to, but if kids can master this scooter, they can master anything. It comes with stability bars which can be removed after your kid gets used to the feel of this scooter.

What Reviewers Are Saying:
Purchased this for my 10-year old son. He absolutely loves it! It's similar to his regular scooters, but it's different enough that he loves to ride it.

My daughter loves her scooter. She doesn't try crazy tricks much, but overall, it's a fun toy for her to use and ride with other kids on the street, mostly as a way to move around and glide.

Awesomely fun scooter! Got this for my 7-year-old's birthday and her dad and I can't stay off of it either.

This scooter rides extremely smoothly and both of my kids (ages 11 and 9 but both above 90% range for height) love it. The bigger wheels and larger frame make this a really good toy for riding on bumpier pavement.

My 13 year old son loves the scooter! It has only been a few days but he’s been riding it back and forth to and from school everyday. He thinks that it’s very portable and fits in his locker very snugly.
