Safety is paramount to parents. We analyzed the crime rates and the number of registered sex offenders for all the towns on our list to come up with the safest communities. Here, we round up our top ten.

(Our list was compiled by using a list of the top 100 cities by population, adding in well-known smaller cities too, and removing cities so close to other large cities that they would have similar data. Then we crunched numbers in two safety categories to come up with our rankings.)
#1: Scottsdale, AZ
Also ranking high for recreation, desert community Scottsdale has an extremely low crime rate.#2: Arlington, VA
The city on our list with the lowest crime rate, Arlington also ranked #1 overall as our best city for families.#3: El Paso, TX
This Texas town's low crime rate goes a long way toward making it a family-friendly place to raise kids.#4: Ann Arbor, MI
Even the downtown of this college town feels safe, according to one local mom, thanks to a low crime rate. Ann Arbor is also rated as the fourth best town for families overall.
#5: Mesa, AZ
The second Arizona community on our list, Mesa is as safe as it is sunny, with few sex offenders and a low crime rate.
#6: Anaheim, CA
While Anaheim struggles with education and healthcare, it excels at maintaining a secure community with a low crime rate.#7: San Diego, CA
Cali's second largest city is also one of its safest, with little crime and few sex offenders in the area.
#8: Portland, OR
It came in sixth overall, but Portland also gets high marks for safety with very few registered sex offenders.#9: New York
New York? Yes, New York. The Big Apple has cleaned up its rep as a crime capitol with a surprisingly low crime rate.
#10: Mobile, AL
