8–10 burp cloths (cloth diapers are cheap and work great).

About 6 “stretchies” (footed long johns—your baby will live in these 24/7).

Petroleum jelly (for the thermometer and circumcision care).

Pacifier (grab 3–4 extras when you find one she likes).
Stuff you don't need…
Rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs. These are no longer recommended for drying up umbilical stumps.
The crib is fine, even for the first night home from the hospital.
Small “drool” bibs.
The burp cloths can do double duty.
