Read on for more!
How would you describe your parenting style?
I don’t have a “style” per se as my children’s needs change every day, but fundamentally, I actively listen to them, I encourage their creativity, ideas and to share their outlook on the world as they see it in the moment. My job is to make sure that they are raised knowing they are loved unconditionally, that they are empathetic, kind, respectful to themselves, others and the planet. And know that they are safe and protected. We are learning every day about how to parent and learning more than ever about ourselves through our children. It is an incredible journey and a gift. And of course, exciting and exhausting – all of the highs and lows that we do our best to handle with humor when it gets overwhelming.
What are your must-have parenting products?
Akid Shoes, all Tom’s of Maine products, Gardner and the Gang (my gender-fluid collection with Kristin Nystrom), Ultima, DoTerra Essential oils, everything from Melissa & Doug and Kids Made Modern, Mini Rodini, Legos (of course), Dr. Sturm’s Bathing Milk Bath and body wash/shampoo, Dyson Air Purifiers and Vacuums have REALLY helped with keeping them healthy from environmental allergies, Babyganics Sunscreen, Water Wipes and thank God for farmers markets and Netflix.
Take us through your healthy beauty routine.
I’ve very conscious about the products I use on my skin. I look for natural options without artificial ingredients whenever possible, so I can feel good about what I’m putting on my body. The same goes for the products in my oral care routine. I’ve been using Tom’s of Maine Activated Charcoal Natural Toothpaste to help keep my smile bright. I love that it gently whitens my teeth and it was specially created to be gentle on enamel and safe for everyday use—an absolute must.
Tata Harper, Shiffa, African Botanicals and Joanna Vargas make some of my favorite beauty products that are clean and unbeatable. RMS beauty products are also SO beautiful and natural. May Lindstrom Honey Mud Mask is great for a nice treat. I also use Halo Face washing pads, which are reusable and recyclable. The amount of waste and pollution from disposable makeup cleansing wipes is horrifying—we must be extremely cautious to help protect our planet.
For supplements, I love Women’s One Daily from Rainbow Light—one a day. It is the best vitamin I have found for myself.
And finally, the best for beauty is lots of water!
Tips for mom to lead more eco-conscious lifestyles?
With a busy schedule, leading a more eco-friendly lifestyle can seem a bit daunting, but I’ve learned the best approach is to take it just one day at a time. A good starting place is to try making simple swaps in your daily routine, like switching out one of your beauty or personal care products for a more natural option.
It’s important to choose products that help you feel good, but I also think we should look to support companies that go a step further to do good by giving back. I love that Tom’s of Maine gives 10% of their profits every year back to nonprofit organizations that support healthy families and the planet. That’s why I teamed up with Tom’s of Maine for their Charcoal for Charity campaign to support Dress for Success and the fantastic work they’re doing to help women build their confidence.
I also believe we should get our children involved and help teach them how to love and protect the planet. My children thankfully are incredibly conscious and aware of taking care of our planet. They love to compost and grow their own herbs and vegetables. I’m thankful that at their school a big part of their education is how they can learn to love and take care of the planet. I come from a family of farmers in the Midwest and was raised to be grateful and take care of the Earth, as it’s the very place that feeds us and gives us this incredible life. This comes naturally to my kids and the more aware they are of what it means to conserve and protect the Earth is something that makes me very proud.
What does your kids’ bedtime routine consist of?
We do a meditation every night and snuggle and read—we love The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak and discovering new books through friends. This is my favorite time as it is when we really get to relax and bond.
Are there any products that help you balance it all as a working mom?
For me, it’s really what helps me relax that keeps me balanced. Finding ways to fit in yoga with Mikey Budd my yoga teacher and DogPound is a gym I love to go to here with Kirk Myers and his team. I love a great Epsom salt bath which you can get at any drug store, Dr. Sturm Sunscreen Drops and brightening serum I keep in my bag at all times. Tacha’s whole line for face and bathing, Sam McKnight’s cool girl spray, Violet Grey is the place I go to splurge on finding great beauty items. I enjoy going to local book stores, like Book Soup, as reading is one of my favorite things. Above all, meditation is key, which is the greatest as it’s available to all and is more valuable than any product I can recommend.
