Diarrhea: At the Doctor

Talk to your doctor about administering a commercial oral rehydration solution (ORS), which restores fluids and essential electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, in approximately the same proportion that they are lost in diarrhea.

Your doctor may ask you about your child’s eating habits and medication use, so keep track of your baby's stools to report to your doctor. A stool sample may be taken to check for bacteria, parasites, and other signs of infection. In addition, a blood test may be given to help rule out certain diseases. The doctor may also request that your child avoids lactose, wheat, and carbohydrates to see if it causes any changes.
