Spend the day with your Valentines making these sweet crafts and heart-shaped treats.
Perfectly Pink Ice Cream Sandwiches
Sandwich a scoop of softened ice cream between 2 chocolate chocolate-chip cookies. Roll the edges of the cookie in sprinkles. Wrap in parchment paper and tie with baker's twine.
To make the mailboxes: Trace the fronts of your mini-mailboxes onto sheets of decorative paper, then cut out and use ModPodge to attach to mailbox fronts. While ModPodge is drying, paint wooden candlesticks in desired colors and set aside to dry. Once mailboxes are dry, cut heart shapes out of red felt and use hot glue to attach to fronts of mailboxes, on top of decorative paper. Use alphabet stamps to stamp names on white cardstock, cut cardstock in small banner shapes and glue each name on top of felt hearts. Add additional trim to front of each mailbox, if desired, then use a glue gun to attach mailboxes to candlesticks. Make your mailboxes about a week ahead of time so your family can begin to fill them with valentines.
To make the Valentines: Use a miniature envelope as a template to create your own out of patterned papers. Cut papers in complementary patterns into heart shapes to use as valentines.
Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut prebaked whole-wheat pizza crusts. Top crusts with tomato sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese and toppings of your choice (we used a mini—heart-shaped cookie cutter to make ours extra special). Bake pizzas at 450°F for 8 to 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Cut mustaches from black self-adhesive paper, making them about 3 inches long. Remove paper backing and attach to glasses, smoothing out any air bubbles.
Place pink candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 1 minute. Remove from microwave and stir to melt completely. Using a spoon, drizzle the candy melts over a large bowl of popcorn; add sprinkles. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, or until melts have hardened. Break up any large pieces before serving.
Carefully open a party hat so it lies flat. Use it as a template to trace its shape onto decorative paper, making it 1/2 inch larger on either side; cut out shape. Glue party hat back together, then cover with decorative paper and glue into place. Glue about 18 inches of crepe paper to the inside edge of the hat, gathering it as you go to create a ruffled texture. Decorate the outside of the hat, if desired, then fill with popcorn.
To make each pom-pom, wrap yarn around the palm of your hand until you have a thick loop (the thicker the loop, the fluffier your pom-pom will be). Slide the loop off your hand, then tightly knot a 10-inch piece of yarn around its center. You will be left with a bundle of yarn that is looped at either end. Cut through the loops and shake out your pom-pom, then trim until it is the size you desire. Use a glue gun to attach pom-pom to a dowel or thin branch. Arrange pom-pom flowers in a vase filled with candy hearts.
