Award-winning actor and accomplished chef David Burtka happens to know a thing or two about throwing a fabulous party. In his new book Life Is a Party: Deliciously Doable Recipes to Make Every Day a Celebration, Burtka shares his favorite tips and tools for organizing a great get together in any season. This fabulous cookbook is filled with photos of Burtka and his family, including hubby and actor Neil Patrick Harris and the couple’s two kids, nine-year-old twins Harper and Gideon. There are also plenty of pics with famous friends along with a perfect party playlist for every occasion.
With winter now upon us, Burtka shares ideas for planning a fun snow day party on those frosty days when school is closed. “Invite anyone who’s off from school or snowed in by the bad weather; it’s the perfect excuse to not leave the comfort of your kitchen or to make the snowy trek over to a neighbor’s house,” he suggests in his book. When it comes to throwing a fun fete, parenting.com asked Burtka to offer a few pointers and party ideas to create a cool gathering that the whole family can enjoy.
How can we return to hosting parties big and small without getting overwhelmed by planning?
Don’t do it alone. Use all your resources, and ask friends and family to help you prep.
Can you share with our readers what you believe makes a great party?
Making people feel special. If your guests feel taken care of, it’s a great party.
Does it take someone with a passion for Pinterest to pull off these Instagram worthy events?
Definitely not. Pinterest can be a great resource, but all you really need is to want to throw a party. Most of the time, having a passion for getting people together is all it takes.
What are your favorite party ideas for kids? How can parents create a unique event that goes beyond cold pizza and paper streamers?
I don’t differentiate between kids and adults when I throw a party. I like to make everybody feel special. Get the kids involved. Kids love to help out in the kitchen. Some of my favorite party ideas for kids are interactive: a taco bar, mac and cheese bar, or an ice cream bar. Let them get their hands dirty and build their own meal.
