The last thing you want is to feel those extra pinches and aches in your feet when you’re holding the extra weight of a growing belly. Whether you’re looking for a casual sneaker, a low-maintenance workwear shoe, or a supportive sandal, there are a variety of options out there that can accommodate swelling feet while still looking stylish. To find the best pregnancy shoes on the market, we had 26 of our own pregnant staffers test over 30 popular choices in real-life scenarios. 

Support and comfort are the two qualities you really want to focus on. During pregnancy, it’s not uncommon to experience changes in your feet like swelling, widening, and lengthening, or pain throughout the foot, and you don’t want your shoes to add to the pain. We put a focus on qualities like arch support, stability, and stretchiness, as well as easy-to-wear styles, cushioning, and breathability when testing shoes. You can expect to pay an average of $100 for a good quality pair that will last even after your due date has passed, so we hope our list can help you find the best pregnancy shoes for you.

Best Sandals for Pregnancy

Birkenstock Gizeh Birko-Flor

Why We Like It

In terms of durable, comfortable sandals, we found you really can’t do better than the Birkenstock Gizeh style. Incredible arch support, heel cups, and a raised toe bed inspired our tester to say that these provided her feet “with more support than some of my sneakers do.” While these don’t look very cushioned, our tester said that on first wear, she felt like she was sliding her foot into a fuzzy slipper. The insole is made of a soft suede that feels good, and there really was no break-in period necessary. 

These are also super easy to slide on and off, with no bending down required. We love the adjustable buckle that allows for plenty of give if your feet start swelling. They offer support in every way and can be worn for hours at a time, and we appreciate the high quality of the materials used. These feel like they would last a long time to justify the price point. 

But Take Note

While the suede lining won’t be damaged by a bit of rain, these shoes aren’t completely waterproof. You’ll want to let them air-dry completely before wearing them again.

Reef Cushion Vera Cruz 

Why We Like It

Made of super soft vegan leather, these live up to their name: They really do feel cushioned and supportive. “From the moment I put them on, it felt like these had been pre-broken in; as if I had contoured these to my foot and preferences in advance of ever ordering them,” our tester raved. Heel cupping, rebound support, and arch support make these feel stable enough for consistent everyday wear with no discomfort included. 

We also love how soft and pliable the leather feels, and the contouring around the foot makes them great for long walks. They feel very high quality, and despite being worn constantly, there was no wear and tear to be found. No-slip traction makes them easy to wear in any condition, and our tester found that her feet never slid out of them when moving around. And at under $100, these are also a fairly budget-friendly option. 

But Take Note

Aesthetically speaking, our tester didn’t love the floral design on the footbed. We also wish these came in half sizes.

Best Sneakers for Pregnancy

Kizik Women’s Prague Slip-On Sneaker

Why We Like It

Bouncy cushioning, great arch support, and a wide toe box that never feels too constrictive are just a few reasons why these Kizik sneakers are our top choice. Another big reason: the way you can easily slip your feet into them without having to adjust the heel, which couldn't be more convenient when bending over feels nearly impossible. Our tester wore them for hours at a time, even for a full day at the zoo, and never felt any sort of discomfort or pain. Between the comfort and the versatility of the style and color, we also think they’re great everyday shoes. “I would plan my outfit around these shoes just so I could wear them to work, knowing I would be comfortable the entire day,” our tester raved. 

These took no time to break in and we love the thick sole and padding, which is a big part of what made them so great to wear for hours at a time. Despite being worn quite often, our tester said that these held up remarkably well and had no real signs of wear and tear. The heel was still in great shape, and our tester said that the material feels high-quality and very sturdy. We also appreciate the wide variety of sizes available and felt that they would stretch pretty nicely if necessary. 

But Take Note

These are made of canvas and leather, which typically aren’t super breathable. While our tester did say these were a “10/10” for breathability, they weren’t worn in especially hot or humid weather. Between the materials used and the fact that there’s no venting, we feel they might not feel quite as light and airy in the summer.

Rothy’s The Original Slip-On Sneaker

Why We Like It

We were thoroughly impressed by these Rothy’s sneakers, which don’t require any lacing and feature a supportive sole, super-lightweight materials, and a versatile style. Our tester noted that she has nearly flat feet, so she didn’t think these would be comfortable but found herself proven wrong. There was no pinching, rubbing, or tightness, and the comfy insole and excellent arch support made her feel very supported and sturdy. She ordered them in a half size up because she was experiencing some swelling and felt that they were able to stretch a bit as well. She also noted that they feel super cushioned. “I feel like I am wearing slippers that are socially acceptable to wear out in public,” she said. 

One small detail we love is that the insoles are stitched in, so you don’t have to worry about them popping out when sliding your feet in and out of them. Our tester felt these were incredibly breathable as well and were good for any kind of weather. They’re made of Rothy’s signature thread, which is made from single-use plastic bottles, making them a more sustainable choice. We love the neutral, versatile look and the high-quality materials that can definitely stand the test of time. 

But Take Note

Our tester noted that the top of the shoe is a bit narrow without a lot of give, so if you have wide feet, you may want to go up half a size. We also wish they were a bit easier to slip on hands free. Our tester said that she did still have to bend over to really get her heel in the shoe, which was especially difficult in the later stages of pregnancy.

Ryka Echo Knit Slip-On Sneaker

Why We Like It

These Ryka sneakers provided some much-needed comfort for our tester, who wore them late in her third trimester while dealing with some swelling. She felt the shoes alleviated a lot of her discomfort, saying that while a lot of shoes seemed to make her swelling worse, these were the only pair that actually helped. The arch elevates in the middle of the shoe, which she found helped with pressure in her heels, giving her better posture overall. 

We really loved the materials used for these shoes. The padded heels and soft rib knit made them feel super comfortable but also pleasantly lightweight. They never felt sweaty, even when worn for long periods of time, and they gave great balance. We like the casual style, and love that these are simple to slip on and off without bending over. 

But Take Note

These definitely have a more casual and athletic look to them, so while great for everyday wear, they may not be appropriate for every situation. If you want something versatile enough to easily dress up or down, these may not be it.

Saysh One 

Why We Like It

Whether you need a shoe for walks, the gym, or just to run errands, these Saysh One sneakers were our favorite versatile pick. Between the excellent cushioning, arch support, and high-quality materials, our tester said these felt like “walking on a cloud.” Our tester sized up as recommended and found that the fit was perfect with no obvious discomfort. They’re flexible enough to stretch and accommodate swelling, and firm soles offer great support when exercising. The padding around the ankle is one of our favorite features because it makes the shoe feel like it’s hugging your feet. 

These didn’t need to be broken in at all, and our tester found them to be comfortable at the gym, while walking around in hot weather, and on a long flight. They’re extremely breathable, with a micro-suede inner that has ventilation holes throughout so your feet never feel sweaty. We also love the removable insole pad that offers extra cushioning if needed (although our tester felt the original insole was great on its own too). The textured knit also makes these feel more stylish than your average athletic sneakers. 

But Take Note

These are almost too breathable. Our tester felt that they are not ideal for very cold weather, even with a pair of socks on. She also noted that, while the toe box width was fine for her narrow feet, it might feel a bit too narrow for anyone with wide feet. Lastly, these do need to be laced up, which may be difficult for pregnant people who don’t want to or can’t bend.

Kizik Roamer

Why We Like It

Although the Kizik Roamer was worn during a different product test, we felt it was a great addition here because of how comfortable these are for long walks. They have great arch support and just enough cushioning to keep your feet happy, so they really cradle your feet even though they’re slip-ons. With these shoes’ snug fit and excellent traction, our tester felt comfortable navigating a variety of different surfaces.

The back of the heel is cushioned, which is great for anyone concerned about blisters. They couldn’t be easier to slip on, with no adjustments needed, and we like the unique shape and look of the back of the shoe that made these feel more elevated. They do feel a bit bulkier than your standard sneaker, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just something to consider. We also like that the insoles can be removed and thrown in the wash, which is great if you want them to feel more fresh instantly. 

But Take Note

Our tester ordered these in her true size and noted that they feel slightly narrow, adding that she would probably opt for a wider size if she ever ordered them again. These shoes also have a very stiff sole that can be off-putting. And while they’re ideal for walking and running errands, we don’t think they’d be up to the task of any high-impact exercise, like running.

Orthofeet Kita Hands Free

Why We Like It

These Orthofeet shoes were another pair we tested for a different purpose, but we feel they’re appropriate for pregnant people as well, especially anyone dealing with foot pain. A science-backed design makes these feel customizable and incredibly comfortable. They’re meant to be adjusted properly, laced-up once, and then not get untied again. Once you have them where you want them, you’ll wear them as slip-on sneakers, which is super convenient. Our tester loved that these never pinched or felt painful, and that there were so many ways to modify the fit. They come with a removable insole and an arch booster to customize support, as well as fitting spacers to ensure that they fit perfectly. 

We found these to be well cushioned, with a springy and bouncy feel. The heel doesn’t slip, and they have great ankle support. They remained in great condition through multiple wears. 

But Take Note

If your feet sweat a lot, these may not be for you. Our tester noted that these really didn’t feel breathable at all, and actually felt a bit warm during each wear. They also require a little bit of an adjustment period, and it took a few wears to really figure out how to get these properly fitted and customized (although once there, the fit was amazing).

OluKai Pehuea Li

Why We Like It

We love that these OluKai sneakers are so versatile and customizable, on top of being comfortable and flexible. They are intended to be worn without socks (if you want socks, our tester recommends going up half a size for the best fit), so they’re super easy to slip on in warm weather. You can wear them two different ways: Heel up as traditional sneakers or heel down and as slip-ons. Another customizable feature is the removable insole that adds a little extra cushioning if you feel like you need it. 

We found these to be super comfortable and perfect for everyday wear. Our tester noted that when worn as slip-on sneakers, they’re not ideal for long walks or any kind of exercise. That said, they are made of a ventilated mesh that makes them super breathable, and while sneakers without socks usually equals sweat, that’s not the case here. They are sturdy, stylish, and supportive enough for day-to-day activities. 

But Take Note

Our tester found that folding down the heel to wear these as slip-on sneakers required a bit of an adjustment period. She really had to wiggle her foot in so her heel wasn’t hanging out and sometimes even bend over and use her hands to get her foot in. With each wear, they break in a bit better to allow easier sliding, but it does take some getting used to.

Kizik Women’s Milan

Why We Like It

The foam padding at the midsole and slight lift in the heel made our tester proclaim, “I literally haven’t taken these shoes off since I received them.” Our tester wore these in a variety of situations and found them consistently comfortable, and she really loved the spring back heel that keeps your foot in place no matter what. The midsole is made of a responsive foam that really elevates the comfort level. It’s just a plus that these are a neutral color and casual style, making them super versatile. 

We also love that these are slip-on sneakers, even if they don’t look like it: They come laced and you can just slip your foot in. Our tester noted they haven’t had to retie them once. The footbed is also removable and washable, so you can keep these smelling and feeling fresh. 

But Take Note

While our tester didn’t have any issues with sweaty feet while wearing these, she did note that nothing about them feels extra breathable, and said they might not be the best choice on a hot and humid day. She also noticed some frays at the ankle after pretty consistent wear, although she said that, for the most part, they seemed like they were really high quality.

Best Work and Dress Shoes for Pregnancy

M.Gemi The Viviana 

Why We Like It

Ballet flats are not known as the most supportive shoe option, but they’re a popular choice for pregnant folks who are avoiding heels and want to wear something chic and trendy. These M. Gemi flats were our favorite because of how surprisingly supportive they are, with great traction that prevents you from feeling like you’re walking around practically barefoot. They have a sportier vibe than many other ballet flats, and our tester described them as “if a ballet flat decided to go rock climbing.” The textured rubber offers excellent traction so you can use them on a variety of surfaces without slipping. We also love the stretchy and thick band on top, which holds your foot firmly in place. 

Our tester ordered their true size and found that, even with a little bit of pregnancy swelling, these shoes still fit perfectly because the band offers a little bit of give. There was no rubbing, chafing, or other discomfort that sometimes comes with flats, and overall they felt incredibly high-quality. This is a very versatile design that you’ll be able to wear to so many different occasions, which is great considering the higher price point. 

But Take Note

These are made of a durable leather and aren’t the most breathable shoes on the market. While our tester didn’t have an issue wearing them on hot days, she did note that there was nothing breathable about them, and so they might not be the best for very hot, humid days, especially if your feet get very sweaty. They are also one of the more expensive shoes we tried, so if budget is a concern, these may not be for you.

Vivaia Julie Round-Toe Chunky Heels

Why We Like It

Heels aren’t exactly a pregnancy shoe go-to, but if you need or want to continue to wear them, these Vivaia Julie heels are our top pick. With a chunky heel that isn’t too high, supportive insoles that make you feel like you’re wearing sneakers, and impressive details to keep you extra comfortable, these are a must for pregnant people wearing heels all day. While some high heels could exacerbate back pain or even increase the risk of falling, this low, wide heel won't do that. Our tester wore these in the office for eight hours a day with zero issues and found that they even stretched a bit to accommodate any swelling throughout the day. 

The shoes have arch support, a counter patch at the heel to help prevent blisters, and extra cushioning in the midsole and insole that our tester raved about. We felt they were very breathable, and loved that they have a 100% biodegradable layer of cloth that helps to inhibit bacterial growth to keep your feet feeling and smelling fresh. The thicker heel offers some much-needed help with balance, and the materials felt high-end and durable. We love the stylish look as well. 

But Take Note

Aesthetically speaking, our tester wished these didn’t have a rounded toe and wasn’t a big fan of the slight sparkle in the yarn. Our tester also experienced some pain at the back of the foot the first time the shoes were worn, so keep in mind that there may be a break-in period.

Rothy’s The Square Mary Jane 

Why We Like It

Easy to put on, chic, just stretchy enough, and comfortable for long wear, these Rothy’s are a staple you’ll reach for no matter what the occasion. Our tester ordered her true size and found these were flexible enough to have a little give whenever her feet were swollen, yet they still feel durable, strong, and high-quality. The strap is flexible but still keeps your foot in place, and the bottom offers great traction. “These really felt like they grew along with me during pregnancy, yet never got stretched out, and honestly felt like magic,” our tester said.  

These were worn in a variety of conditions, including on pebbles and uneven terrain, and our tester never had an issue. We found them to be very breathable, lightweight, and convenient to slip into. Our tester said they felt just as comfortable as her Birkenstocks, with great arch support and cushioning. She never experienced any pain or discomfort when wearing them, and also found them to look great even after several wears. Thanks to their minimal and chic style, they can easily be dressed up or down, which is a big plus.  

But Take Note

On the first few wears, these felt a little slippery on the bottom. Our tester advises wearing them on some uneven terrain to get the bottoms scuffed up so they offer better traction.

Rothy’s The Lug Loafer 

Why We Like It

Made of soft, warm merino wool, these are ideal for colder weather, especially if you don’t want to be stuck wearing only boots for the season. They have a classic, versatile look to them that allows them to be easily dressed up or down. We love the cushioned insoles, which make them a dream to wear. They offer just enough support and feel super practical. That said, they’re still stylish, made of high-quality materials that show virtually no wear and tear. 

Our tester loved the rugged outsoles, deeming them “the best grip and traction I’ve ever seen in a loafer.” She wore them for hours with no pain or discomfort, and the chunky heel was surprisingly light. We also love that these can be slipped on and off, with a pull tab for an extra tug if needed. 

But Take Note

These did have a break-in period (our tester needed to apply a small bandage after wearing these the first time) but felt fine after the first or second wear. Our tester also wore them in the same size she used for a different pair of Rothy’s but thought she could easily have sized up for a more comfortable fit. That’s something to keep in mind when choosing a size, especially if you’re dealing with swelling. They’re also not going to feel very breathable in warmer weather.

Birdies The Vesper Flat 

Why We Like It

A pair of elevated flats can go far, and we love this Birdies option as a versatile leather shoe that can be dressed up or down. Our tester notes that the insole has a nice quilted, padded feel to it that makes them stand out compared to other flats. 

We also like that these are stylish. They come in a variety of colors, with a textured leather that makes them look unique. Since they’re easy to slip on and off, there’s not much bending involved, and they feel good even after a few hours of walking. 

But Take Note

Our tester noted that these felt very tight out of the packaging and on first wear. At first, she was concerned they were too tight, but they quickly got worn in (on the first wear) and then felt like they fit perfectly. Still, if you’re experiencing swelling, you might want to go half a size up. Another note is that genuine leather means these aren’t super breathable.

Best Slip-On Shoes for Pregnancy

Sanuk You Huarache 

Why We Like It

If you’re pregnant during the summer, you’ll want to find breathable, lightweight shoes, especially since swelling can be exacerbated in the heat. These Sanuk sandals are a great alternative to flip-flops, and the closed toe elevates them just a bit without ever making them feel restrictive. These are more supportive than your average sandal, with just the right amount of arch support for stability and some foam padding in the insole for comfort. Our tester didn’t experience any pinching and said they were soft and just stretchy enough to accommodate swelling. 

Even though these are made of leather, which isn’t always known as super breathable, these have ventilation slits throughout, allowing for a nice air flow to keep your feet cool. While definitely still very casual, these sandals could easily be worn with jeans, linen pants, or sun dresses.

But Take Note

Despite the comfort level, our tester felt like these are not as versatile as some other shoes out there. She noted that they seemed too bohemian and relaxed to ever wear to work.

Allbirds Women’s Wool Loungers 

Why We Like It

These Allbirds are the best sneaker alternative to slippers that we’ve found. They were worn in a different product test, but the tester was nine months pregnant and proclaimed that these were the only shoes she could get on by herself. If you’re looking for something comfortable, flexible, and less structured, these are a great everyday option. While they don’t offer a ton of arch support, our tester still loved wearing them, even for long periods of time, and appreciated that they didn’t feel restrictive at all. 

These are made of a soft merino wool that, while not incredibly breathable, does make them warm and cozy. Our tester noted that there was no breaking in period, no chafing, and no discomfort, and loved how durable they feel. Even after two months of wear, they still looked “perfect.”

But Take Note

These don’t come in half-sizes, so you may need to size up to get the right fit for you. They also don’t have a lot of arch support, so if that’s what you’re looking for, these may not work.

Teva ReMEMBER Terrain Slip-On Shoe  

Why We Like It

These Teva shoes are ideal for anyone who wishes they could just wear their slippers everywhere, even in winter. Made with a foam footbed, they feel “like you’re walking on a squishy cushion in all the right ways,” our tester said. Thanks to the open back and roomy fit, they would nicely accommodate thicker socks in colder weather, even with swollen feet. 

Even though these feel like something you’d want to lounge around in at your house, they’re also great for outdoor wear. There’s plenty of grip on the outsole, and they’re also made with a water-resistant material. They have a nice cozy feel to them that is especially comforting during the fall and winter months. 

But Take Note

These don’t have structured arch support (although our tester said they didn’t have any issue with that and still felt supported and comfortable). They’re also not as versatile as some other options, both because of how cozy they are and because they have a more casual, outdoorsy feel to them.

Best Clogs for Pregnancy

Birkenstock Boston Soft Footbed Clog 

Why We Like It

The popular Birkenstock Boston clogs are a must for moms-to-be who want a casual shoe that slides on and isn’t a sneaker. These were worn in a separate product test (not by a pregnant person), but we felt they were perfect for this list because of how great they feel on your feet. They’re a dream to wear, especially for long periods of time. One of our favorite things about these shoes is that they had a very minimal break-in period—our tester found that after just two wears, her footprint was already settling into the innersole. While some Birkenstocks have a hard footbed, these are made with a soft one (which contributes to that short break-in period), and our tester raved about how great it felt. It’s still anatomically supportive (meant to reshape your arches to what they should be), but there’s an extra layer of foam and supportive ridges under and in between the toes for comfort. 

We love the convenience of these as well. A lot of slip-on sneakers require a little help when getting your foot in, but these are truly hands-free, making them ideal for pregnant women who can’t bend over much. Our tester felt they were very secure and never had an issue with her foot sliding out. She loved wearing them for hours at a time. In fact, she noted that they somehow felt more comfortable as the day went on. She also found that when measuring her foot and properly using the size guide on the Birkenstock website, she ended up with clogs that felt almost made for her feet. 

But Take Note

Our tester felt that these were lightweight and comfy, but definitely more comfortable with socks on. On one rainy, humid day, she wore them without socks and the inner suede gave her such bad blisters that they took weeks to heal. At $160, these are a little pricey, especially considering that, aesthetically, they are not the most versatile shoes out there.

SeaVees Bodega Clog 

Why We Like It

These SeaVees clogs are fun, colorful, and a great durable choice for someone who spends a lot of time outdoors. They’re made of matte natural rubber that is waterproof and feels really high-quality, so they’re perfect for rainy days, gardening, or just generally being outside. The outsole has a small heel and grooves that make them feel stable, and the heel comes up a bit to keep your foot in place. 

These are super easy to slip on, and our tester noted that the padding on the footbed makes them feel really comfortable and cushy. She also said that there seems to be plenty of room in the shoe for thicker socks, and she thinks they would be ideal for someone who might deal with occasional swelling. There were never any issues with pain and discomfort, and she felt supported and balanced whenever she wore them. 

But Take Note

Our tester pointed out that these really don’t have arch support. She also felt that, because of the rubber, these weren’t very breathable. She never had any issues wearing them in mild weather, but wouldn’t reach for them on a very hot day.

Haflinger Gz Classic Grizzly Slippers

Why We Like It

Crunchy moms, pay close attention: These Haflinger clogs are a casual, comfy, and supportive choice for pregnancy and beyond. They have great arch support for a clog, and our tester noted that they really helped with her lower back pain, especially after a few hours of wearing them. They’re super comfortable, with the perfect amount of cushioning, and our tester swears she felt more “energized” wearing them. 

These are made of high-quality materials and feel like they would really last, making them well worth their price. Despite being worn pretty regularly, our tester didn’t notice that they looked old or any different. They have enough room in them to wiggle your toes around and to accommodate swelling, but they still fit nicely. They’re almost like wearing slippers that have better traction.

But Take Note

Our tester said she wished these had more heel support, as she didn’t love the feeling that her heel could just slip out. Because these are wool, they’re not breathable and are better for cool weather.

Seavees Ballard Boot

Why We Like It

“If a slip-on sneaker and ankle rain boot had a baby, these Seavee’s would be the adorable result,” our tester noted, and it’s true. Made of sturdy, water-resistant leather, these practical ankle boots are great for chilly, wet weather and are versatile and comfortable enough to be worn every day. They have a super cushioned footbed and a nice wide toe box, and they are flexible enough to accommodate some swelling, even with thick socks on. Our tester noted that the padded insole alleviated any strain on her feet. 

We love that these can easily be slid on and off, and there are loops to help you get them on if necessary. Though they’re meant for colder temps, they also manage to be fairly breathable, with air channels that help keep your feet dry even if it’s pouring outside. They’re excellent fall and winter boots you can wear for running errands or chasing after other little ones. They also have a high-quality, sturdy feel that really doesn't show much wear and tear. 

But Take Note

It’s necessary to wear higher socks with these boots. Our tester found that the shoes rubbed uncomfortably against her ankles when she wore them with lower socks, causing some annoying pain. And while fairly easy to slip on, you may end up having to bend to use the pull loops so they really get on your feet.

Coziest: Ugg Mini Bailey Button II Boot 

Why We Like It

Uggs may be everywhere again, but some pregnant people may find most of the trendier mini versions hard to put on. They usually require a little help getting them on your feet, meaning you have to bend over. That’s not the case with the Mini Bailey boots. They’re a bit more flexible than some other options, and we found that you can slip your feet inside of them hands free. They also have a cute button on the side that you can unloop to roll them down or just to be able to get your foot in more easily (although we never found it necessary). 

On top of that, they’re also ultra cozy and a great winter shoe. They’re made with super soft sheepskin, which molds to your feet and creates a really comfortable experience. We really loved the traction on these boots, which makes them a great go-to for wet or slippery conditions (although, heads up, you might want to treat them with a waterproofing spray first to make them last longer).

But Take Note

Our tester noted that you may want to size up a bit, especially if you’re experiencing swelling, as these have a bit of a snug fit. It’s also worth pointing out that they’re pricey, and because they’re made of suede and sheepskin, they’re a little high-maintenance and will make your feet warm.

Other Notable Pregnancy Shoes

• Allbirds Tree Loungers: These slip-on sneakers offer a nice amount of support and traction, with comfortable footbeds and a soft midsole. We liked the casual, low-maintenance look and easy way of slipping them on, but we wish the materials felt more high-quality, especially for the price. Our tester also felt that the toe box was too narrow and felt some pressure on her ankles after wearing these for a long period of time. Even though they look very breathable, the wool lining actually makes them pretty warm and not suitable for hot weather. 
• Converse Chuck Taylor Shoreline Slip-Ons: These shoes are inexpensive and easy to wear with most casual outfits. While we love the classic look of these Converses, we don’t think they’re a great fit for any pregnant woman dealing with sweating. They aren’t stretchy and seem to be made for narrow feet, so getting them on can be difficult, and they were too small, even after sizing up. 
• Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed Suede: Comfortable and cushioned, with soft footbed and really great arch support, we found these to be a great option for cute sandals that are easy to put on. The two adjustable straps mean these can easily accommodate swelling. We like the overall breathability, but feel the suede on the inside doesn’t do well with a buildup of sweat. It’s worth noting that during testing, one of the buckles broke, and our tester also found that they didn’t offer great traction.  
• APL Women’s TechLoom Bliss: Anyone who is active will appreciate the excellent traction of these sneakers, and we also like how much they support the feet with a comfortable toe box and cushioning in all the right spots. However, we found that the sizing was off. Even after going up a size with no swelling, they still seemed so tight in places that, after long periods of wear, our tester almost felt like they were losing circulation to their feet. 

Our Testing Process 

To find the best pregnancy shoes out there, we had 26 pregnant members of our staff wear the shoes several times for at least 30 minutes while doing everyday tasks, like walking, working, or running errands. We tested over 30 different pairs of shoes and had testers rate them based on comfort, fit, support, breathability, design, and quality. We also included a few styles of shoes from other tests (with non-pregnant people) because they’re really great for pregnancy too. To c choose our favorites, we evaluated the following attributes: 

• Fit: Testers noted how the shoes fit according to their usual shoe size, and they also took note of any discomfort (like pinching, rubbing, or tightness) they felt while wearing the shoes. We asked them about how well the cushioning worked when they were on their feet for longer periods of time. Customized options for a better fit (like adjustable straps or removable insoles) were also taken into consideration, since feet can swell or change shape during pregnancy. 
• Support: Testers were encouraged to pay attention to the arch support the shoes offered, as well as any issues they may have had with stability or balance while wearing them. Testers noted if the shoes helped with any pregnancy-related foot issues, like swelling or discomfort. We also asked if the shoes had any notable design elements that contributed to support, and if they felt the toe box was wide enough to easily accommodate their feet. 
• Comfort: Overall comfort was obviously a priority, and testers rated this based on how comfortable the shoes felt during the duration of the test, as well as whether or not they experienced any discomfort when wearing the shoes. We asked about cushioning and whether or not there were any issues inside the shoe that might be irritating, like stitching, interior seams, padding, or the shoe shape. 
• Breathability: Testers were asked about how well the shoes worn prevented excessive sweating or discomfort, and they also noted if there were any features that helped with this, like mesh panels or moisture-wicking liners. We asked about moisture buildup or overheating, and if the shoes seemed suitable for different weather conditions. In the end, we wanted shoes that felt more breathable. 
• Design: While pregnancy shoes should be comfortable and supportive, we also acknowledge that many pregnant people want them to look stylish and chic as well. Testers talked about the style of the shoes they wore, as well as their versatility and what made them desirable to wear. They also discussed design elements that made them easier to wear, like slip-on styles that don’t require too much bending to put on, and enough traction that they didn’t have to worry about slipping. 
• Value: The pregnancy shoes tested were priced between $55 and $220, with a median price of $105. We asked testers whether or not they felt the price was justified, and if they were likely to use them on a regular basis. We also asked if they would recommend the shoes to other people. 
• Quality: We asked if the materials felt high-quality and sturdy, or cheap and flimsy, and we also asked them to perform a bend test to see if they bend under the toe as they should or in a random spot in the middle. Testers noted any wear and tear that happened, as well as how the shoes held onto odor.

How Pregnancy Affects Feet

As your pregnancy progresses, you may find that your feet are swollen all the time, mostly due to an increase in blood flow. It usually becomes noticeable around the fifth month of pregnancy and can become worse during the third trimester. Dr. Rose says that many pregnant people will also experience widening or even lengthening of the feet, and in some cases, these changes will last beyond pregnancy. 

“In the third trimester, we worry about loose ligaments,” explains Dr. Daughtry. “The reproductive hormone relaxin is released to loosen and relax all your muscles, joints, and ligaments in preparation to give birth, and the ligaments in your feet are no exception.” 

Dr. Daughtry also notes that added weight from pregnancy can cause additional problems like plantar fasciitis (inflammation in the tissue on the bottom of your foot) or pain in the ball of the foot. 

In the later stages of pregnancy, you’ll also find that thanks to your belly, bending over to put shoes on or to lace them or adjust them becomes quite uncomfortable. All of that said, you’ll want to find shoes that can accommodate potential swelling and are a breeze to put on and wear for long periods of time. 

Factors to Consider When Buying Shoes During Your Pregnancy

• Style of Shoe: Dr. Daughtry advises avoiding high heels, and instead she recommends a lower-profile shoe (she loves Rothy’s slip-on sneakers). Don’t go too flat, though. She notes that ballet flats typically don’t have enough arch support to accommodate the loosening and ligament laxity that occurs in pregnancy. Rose loves easy-to-wear styles like mules, slip-on sandals, and booties, while Dr. Valencia mentions brands like Birkenstocks, New Balance, and Vionics as some favorites. 
• Fit and Sizing: Be sure to try shoes on when shopping while pregnant because your size before pregnancy may no longer fit. You should also look for shoes that can accommodate swelling, Dr. Daughtry says. “Look for shoes that offer materials in the toe box area like knit or mesh material which is great for its stretchiness,” she advises. She recommends avoiding anything too restrictive or narrow in the toe box, as well as leather or nylon-like materials that won’t have any give to them. Dr. Rose recommends looking for a soft, forgiving upper that can accommodate changes in swelling throughout the day and avoiding materials like patent leather. 
• Getting Them On and Off: Pay attention to how easy the shoes are to get on and take off. Slip-ons may be your best bet, as laces can be difficult when bending over. “A few brands, like Kizik, specialize in hands-free slip-on shoes, which can be helpful,” Dr. Daughtry says. 
• Support: Support is really important when you’re pregnant. “A lot of times, shoes that are easy to put on, like sandals or flip-flops, lack the arch support and shock absorption needed for supporting the added weight of pregnancy,” Dr. Daughtry warns. “Pregnant women should look for shoes with both innate arch support as well as the ability to add additional arch support.” Be wary of athletic running shoes that have very thick, squishy soles, Dr. Daughtry warns. “These can cause instability and increase the risk of falling as in pregnancy your center of gravity has shifted. Overall, you’re looking for a good combination of support and stability, but also good cushion and shock absorption.” 
• Comfort: Remember that when ligaments relax, your feet can almost feel like they’re flattening. “It’s important to look for shoes that will support the posterior tibial tendon as well as the heel, as those are the two common areas of pain as the pregnancy proceeds,” Dr. Valencia says. “Slight heel lift and thicker soles, as well as arch supports, are important features.” Dr. Rose also points out the importance of good traction, saying it will provide a steadier gait since a pregnant woman’s center of balance can easily be thrown off. 

Your Questions, Answered 

Should I buy bigger shoes for pregnancy?

Both Dr. Daughtry and Dr. Rose recommend waiting to see what happens and trying shoes on before buying a size up. “Some women don’t get any swelling whatsoever while pregnant, so if you go too big, your feet can slide in your shoes and cause blisters,” Dr. Daughtry points out. “It really depends on how your feet are doing during pregnancy.” She recommends monitoring for any tightness or pain when wearing shoes you already own to get an idea of whether or not you need a different size.

How many shoe sizes do you go up when pregnant?

This can really vary depending on the person and pregnancy. While swelling of the feet is common during the later stages of pregnancy, it’s not something everyone will experience. “Overall, pregnancy can cause your foot size to grow a half to a whole shoe size, but it doesn’t happen with everyone,” Dr. Daughtry says. If you’re in doubt, buy from a store with a forgiving and easy return policy.
