The Short of It
When a 13-year-old girl thought her parents were too drunk to drive home from an Austin nightclub on Saturday night, she got behind the wheel as the designated driver.
Two Texas parents were drinking at Club Vongos in Austin Saturday night with their 13-year-old and 7-year-old daughters. When the family left the club around 11 p.m., the teen daughter thought her parents were too drunk to drive and decided it would be safer if she drove them the 30-minute trip home. Her parents agreed.
Police then received a call that a silver Chevrolet pickup truck was running stoplights, driving erratically and going 25 to 30 mph below the highway's 70 mph speed limit. Another motorist says he witnessed the truck cause three near collisions.
Police stopped the car to find the parents visibly intoxicated and the 13-year-old driving, as well as a partially consumed, cold beer under the driver's seat, suggesting one of the parents was continuing to drink on the drive home. The mother called it a "little adventure" for the girl, police said. The parents were arrested and have each been charged with child endangerment.
Seriously? What is wrong with people?! First of all, why are you at a nightclub with your children? Here's an idea: let the 13-year-old daughter babysit her younger sister while you go out. Drink your little hearts out and then call a cab for the ride home.
